Post Z/28 Clone free zone = parts restriction

GM has just announced, in an effort to prevent Z/28 cloning, approx 40 specific Z/28 parts will be restricted:

With the launch of the new Camaro Z/28, approximately 40 different Z/28 specific parts will be placed on restriction. This action is being taken to protect the vehicle’s brand and customer’s investment by preventing the “cloning” of the Z/28.

Dealers will be required to obtain specific vehicle & owner information before any parts order request can begin.

Part orders for the restricted parts will be monitored and reported to the Camaro Program Team, GM Regional Warranty Managers and appropriate Field personnel.

Z/28 parts replaced for warranty, will be requested back through the parts return process, for analysis.

In other words, GM is going to charge you out the *** if you need to replace those parts. Not to say I would do any different, but its likely a multitude of factors since it appears there will only be 2 years of limited production on the Z/28 they don't want to hold onto a warehouse of specific parts when production ceases. It just happens to also be a great marketing ploy.

Having owned several cars... including the aforementioned GNX... which were either parts restricted or which the manufacturer eventually stopped supporting, I would highly recommend anyone who plans on keeping their Z/28 for any length of time to stock up now. There is no downside to doing that; either you will need the part or you will be able to sell it for more than you paid for it once GM stops making them.

Restricting parts to prevent cloning sounds great now, but ten years down the road you will realize it sucks when the part you need is unavailable from GM and you have to hunt it down and pay the outlandish new market price.

And that WILL happen.

Been there, done that and, like I said, a smart person woiuld stock up now.

Good insight. What unique Z/28 parts would you suggest to stock up on?

Those front splitters are going to be in high demand.
Those things are going to be damaged within a year for sure if you drive the car.

Do you think the parts you have for the Zl1/1LE will work on the Z/28 ? if you look at the pic of it on the side the bolts are in the rear of the front bumper not the front.
