Just a fun question for you other MT guys...

Has anyone actually given it gas in reverse? I have yet to in all the times I've backed up. In fact I don't recall ever getting full engagement of the clutch, generally I just hit the friction point for a second or two and that's plenty of energy to back it up. It helps that my driveway is sloped away from the garage, but still. A random thought, but wondering if others had the same experience.

Given the rear visability, I'm not sure it would be a great idea to be backing up very fast anyways.

Yes I have given it gas in reverse. I do not notice anything strange about it. What are you experiencing?

From another thread, it appears to be possible to break the rear loose going in reverse ...

No problems, just seems like the engine has more than enough power to back up at a reasonable speed. Just struck me as odd, never driven a car with that much torque combined with that little visability.

Applying excessive amounts of power/shock to the ring and pinion in reverse is probably not a great idea.

With the way ring and pinion gears are cut, they are substantially weaker when spun backwards as opposed to normal forward opperation.

Yeah, I'd be careful doing that. You probably wont damage anything but it is definitely not made for high speeds or hard starts in reverse. If you see the inside of a manual trans I doubt you would ever floor it in reverse again.
