CAI question?

I just installed a KnN CAI on my 2011 Camaro LS. My question is with the cone shaped filter it came with. First of all the housing the kit came with has 3-sides and the bottom, protecting the filter from the rest of the engine. My concern is that the top is exposed. I've seen on videos that this is acceptable. Won't excessive dirt enter the filter area and eventually possibly enter the engine? Also, ive read that you can use these style filters dry or wet. Can someone with more experience, explain the differences? Is dry or wet better than the other? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I had a K&N CAI on my GP GXP. The filter would get dirty so I would have to clean it and re-oil it once a year. I never had any issues with it and I had the CAI for 5-6 years.
