and the lower hp in automatics is because of higher drivetrain loss, aka the "resistance" the power goes through as its transmitted from the engine , to trans, to the rear end.
Advertised hp at the engine has nothing to do with drivertrain loss through the drivertrain. A 400hp engine rated at the flywheel (or what manufacturers advertise at) is a 400hp engine regardless of what transmission or other driveline parts it has.

The difference in hp between the automatics and manuals is due to some parts of the engines being different.

I'm looking to trade up to a v8 as well and wanted to ask the same questions. Thanks for the post.

it seems like every other day i read a new thread and no matter how its started somewhere along the lines it turns into auto vs manual. Which turns into my auto is faster than your manual at the drag strip, but last time i checked i wasn't able to find and Ls3 to L99 conversion kit. The debate will go on forever but at the end of the day they are both camaros so its a win win...

What do you mean you can't find a l99 to ls3 conversion kit?? Just about everyone sells them.

Ahh.. typo.. got it.

But I still disagree with your argument. You're comparing engines in a transmission argument. So:

LS3 > L99
&
Auto > Manual (In high end drag racing.)

It deletes AFM, DOD, and VVT. Making it a little stronger. Usually only done if pushing big boost from a superchager or turbo. Or done if switching to a blower cam or big lopey cam. Tuneing required.

ditch the afm lifters and tuning it out is a good thing. i know of no magical way that ditch vvt all of a sudden makes more power. i urge you to take a look at properly tuned and modded vvt setups. doing a ls3 conversion might be easier or better put more readily available due to less tuners feeling comfortable with dealing with vvt.

What is VVT and DOD? So the conversion kit keeps it an automatic just with same characteristics as the LS3?

That had to be an experience!

Variable Valve Timing. A pretty cool thing that allows the cam to have a wider powerband, however if going with forced induction or big lopey power there are concerns with it's reliability.

DOD I can't remember but I think it's the physical parts of AFM in the engine.

The L99 is just a slightly modified LS3 and the conversion makes it an LS3 again. It has no affect on the transmission.
