I think this is part of the anti theft deal. If the radio came in the car, you would never need to enter anything. I would call the dealer and ask where to go from here.

I would assume it would take something like that, and if it were stolen, then it might show up if it were reported. Since you bought it, should be no problem.

Yes. The radios have been VIN encrypted since the late '90s - early 2000s. The dealer or a shop with re-flashing tools (harnesses & software) have to flash the radio for your car's VIN. They should require proof-of-purchase for the radio. Same goes for if an ECM, PCM, or BCM need to be replaced.

This makes no sense why they do this with stock radios. My friend had the same problem when he tried to use my stock radio in his Silverado when I upgraded the stereo in my truck. I can understand a pin that can be used by the owner, but there is no reason for it to need to be flashed at the dealership. I can't imagine stock radio theft being a huge problem. Just seems like a money grab for the dealerships.

You're absolutely correct. But it used to be a problem. This is reason it's not a problem anymore.

It's not a big deal. It only takes them a few minutes. If your dealer's service department is customer friendly, they may only charge you for half-hour's labor. My local dealership did one for me for $35, but that was a few years ago.

Even if it was a problem, it could be easily solved with a pin instead of having to be flashed by the dealer. The dealership wanted to charge my friend over $100 to flash my old radio.

It's easier to have them VIN locked when the car is built. If they came with a default pin, many would not even change it which isn't much of a deterant against theft.
