TUNING
For those of you who have had your cars tuned, has it been worth it? Do they also do the transmission or is that an extra tune. My car is stock except for a Borla axel back. Gonna cost about $400.00. Forgot to ask about the tranny tune.

They can do it all at the same time. If they tell you different, don't use them.
I would not pay for a tune if my only mod was exhaust, unless the exhaust mod was headers.

I had mine done by Phil at Tampa Tuning. He did everything at once. I am very pleased with the result and highly recommend his work to anyone with an LS3 / L99 variant motor. Well worth every penny I paid!

So are you saying I wont realize any gains at all? Not even smoother gearchanges? Perhaps I am on the wrong track. I dont plan any mods and yes it is strictly Borlas for sound. Not cat back or headers. Please respond. I dont want to waste money. |

I guess you may be asking the wrong question. If you are having issues with rough gear changing, then having your car tuned when you only have Borlas would be a waste of money. If you add a CAI, maybe some headers with the Borlas, then it wouldn't be a waste.
Rough gear changing, and maybe I'm reading this wrong, is a whole different topic.

The gear changing isnt that bad. Just seems to shift out of first and second very quickly.I am just looking for a little more power and smoother gear changes if possible without any major mods. COMMENTS PLEASE.

I also had mine tuned by Phil at Tampa Tune. He was great. I would do it when you are finished with any other mods like headers CAI and throttle body. That way you only need to get it tuned once. Well worth the money.

i think you can just do a tranny tune. I think Tampa Tuning offers that. Maybe shops in your area do to. If not road trip!!!

GM does a pretty good job pulling power out of these cars, especially considering the regulations they have to deal with. The more you do to the car, the more a tune will do for it. You also don't want to have to pay for multiple tunes so if you did intend to make any changes, it would save money to have the tune done after the mods were done. Most people start with a CAI and exhaust. Hell, most people have been starting with improving intake and exhaust flow with bolt on parts for 70+ years.

Try driving in Sport Mode - it will raise the shift points a bit and hold the gears longer. I would strongly recommend getting a Range AFM deactivation device ($200) to rid yourself of that pesky AFM.

These cars come from the factory tuned down to support the air flow coming from the stock intake and exhaust. The LS3 and L99 are pretty bullet proof when they are tuned properly by someone that has the right experience. Adding headers and high flow cats will really wake up the horsepower in these motors and you will notice a big increase with the needed tune to go with these mods. If you are not going to add these items the tune is not cost effective and in most cases a CAI system does not require a tune.
