K1LOL here. I haven't mounted my Kenwood D710A in the Camaro yet. It's still in the Celica. The thought of an antenna stuck on the roof of the Camaro just doesn't work for me. For now I 'll have to stick to the Yaesu VX8R HT.

Still giving thought to mounting a ICOM 208H. G8 has a cubby that the head can be mounted in, I have a dashhawk there now. Perhaps Camaro has similar space. But, yea, it's the antenna. If/when it happens it will likely be a larsen thru glass on the back window. Other option is to place a piece of vinyl on the deck lid and mag mount one of the mini whips (25W max).. Give the undercover cop car look

Use the antenna for portable operation right now. Finding a place for a remote head is still on the project list.

I was looking over my dash last night. The Head could be mounted with a custom bracket between the trim strip above the air vents and radio. I've seen the lighting mods done on that strip in another thread so I know it could be removed and the bracket attached somwhere behind the trim strip. You would probably need to clear a bit of the trim away to allow enough space for the bracket.

I know this is an old thread, but anyone looking for ideas on how to install their radio (Amateur Radio) equipment - this is what I did and it is working pretty good. I installed a Yeasu FT-857D head unit on a ProClip mount #834377. No problems shifting or lifting the cigarette adapter plug/flap - and its wife approved! Had her sit down in the passenger seat first to make sure her knees would clear - The radio itself is mounted on a ******** amp board in the trunk, passenger side. For the antenna - I used a Diamond HRKS adhesive SO-239 mount with thin coax. I chose a Comet SS680 dual-band VHF/UHF antenna instead of a Comet SSB-5 (both will work) the SS680 is a bit smaller (27 inches). My SWR on 2m is around 1.1 on 147.00 and goes up to 1.3 around 145.00 - I can live with that. Haven't tested SWR on 70cm. Reports into repeaters over 40 miles away are good. I ran the coax through a small gromet, I believe is used to equalize air pressure when closing the door....had to make a few small knife cuts here, then covered with duct tape. Hope this helps.

Might as well keep the thread alive being that I just put a ham radio in my Camaro 2 days ago. Remote face is right on top of the steering column behind the wheel with the body of the radio in the trunk. I pulled the 2 wires for the center dash speaker out of the amp harness, added 5 ohms of resistance and put a mono 1/8 plug on it to use as the remote speaker. Finally a use for that center speaker! For power I put a relay between the radio and the battery switched by the remote line for the amp. The antenna is a Diamond MR77 antenna on the trunk lid. Next time I get a chance I'll take some pics.

If anyone has any pics to post of any ham radio gear in an SS much would be appreciated. I am getting ready to install an FTM-400 into my SS.

I don't have a remote head kit for my Icom- it's an ancient 207H but I like it. There are some new Chinese off-brand mobiles with TINY remote heads and the initial reviews are that they are cheap and work well. Almost disposable because they are so cheap.
I may go that way, as for now I stick an HT in the cup holder and have a small mag mount antenna on the trunk.

FTM 400 Mount

I just installed my FTM 400 using a universal windshield mount. I just bought one that would hold an IPHONE 7 and allowed the bottom of the remote head to rest on the dash! Works like a champ. I made a really long cable to go from the base unit all the way to the head and routed the cable under the rug, then under the center console then up through the center speaker and then to the head unit. Clean as a whistle! My antenna is a trunk lid mounted magnet mount. I also have a spare yellow top battery in the trunk in case I decide to use the unit with the car off! Ill post pics soon!

A CB Radio is a viable alternative to mobile telephones.
