Brake Rotor Wear -- Need Input
I'm having my brake pads replaced, and my dealer is telling me that I need my rotors replaced too at 34K miles. This seems odd to me, especially since I do mostly highway driving to/from work (no track time).
Has anyone had to replace their rotors during their first brake pad replacement? The dealer told me that the rotors were too worn down to turn due to minimal remaining thickness. Thoughts anyone?

It might be true, the OEM pads are Metallic, they stop pretty good, but they also put a lot of wear on the rotors.

OK. That makes some sense. I've just never owned a car that had the pads wear down the rotor that quickly. I know the Camaro is heavy too, so that's not helping.

I just spoke with the dealer and he had the mechanic measure my rotors.
Thickness (I'm not sure of the units.. cm maybe?) New: 1.25 Measured: 1.21 Min before replacement required: 1.18 To turn my rotors would change it from 1.21 to below 1.18, so the recommendation is to replace at this point.

Yea, you might want to think about Ceramic pads., Less brake dust and less wear on the rotors.

I never had a good experience with ceramic pads. They do dust less, but usually when they heat up they tend to heat the caliper too as they don't absorb much heat and that ends up making your brakes less efficient.
If you are looking for aftermarket upgrades, I went with BP's slotted rotors and their premium semi-metallic pads. |
