2011 Camaro SS with mods vs stock Mitsubishi 3000GT

Hey guys,

My friend has a mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 twin turbo AWD with M6 trans, stock. I have a 2011 2SS/RS/M6 with headers, dyno tune, high flow cats, x pipe, straight pipes, vararam intake, ported throttle body, pfadt trailing arms toe rods and bushings. My car runs a 12.136 @ 115.25

He claims that while his car is no match on the straights, he would defeat me on a road course/turns.

My car weighs 3775lbs with 1/4 tank of gas in driving condition without me in it, his car weights in theory 3800lbs so I dont see a weight advantage their. He does have AWD, but alot loss HP. Plus his car is aging.

Street tires on both cars.

So who has the edge and why?

You should win easily against a stock 300GT VR-4. Same HP and AWD as a EVO and STI but a huge weight penalty. They made like 300 flywheel hp. AWD should give him some traction advantages. But the one I drove I didnt feel handled any better than my old 98 Cobra did stock. And his car weighs more than yours

If he has a stock 3000GT, you should be able to handle him in both road course and drag strip. Road course would just come down to you knowing how to handle the SS smooth through the corners.

assuming driving on a road course in a car is similar to a bike...driver skill will matter MUCH more than the car. i don tthink it will matter to the extent it does on a bike, but it will matter. most people can go fast in a straight line...throw in some turns-braking, accelerating, its a whole new game.

Road course would be even worse for him. RWD is better and less drive train loss means you'll pull away on every straight away. AWD's best advantage is its launch and grip off road.

Tight course like auto-x or a track? To be honest most road course races will be the driver. I've seen guys in Mini Coopers and Hondas destroy 400hp Corvettes and Cobras. As far as RWD being an advantage over the AWD, The AWD system in the 3000GT is pretty advanced. For the time period, only the Skylines GT-R's were more advanced. It's power management might be enough to make up for any extra loss. It, also had a computer suspension system and spoiler and a variable exhaust (somewhat like the optional exhaust offered on the 2013 camaro)

All that being said, with even driver abilities, the difference in horsepower gives the Camaro a huge advantage.

Though you're right about this specific circumstance that the 3000gt would be worse off in a road race, your logic is severely flawed. AWD's best advantage is it's ability to corner-exit much more aggressively than rwd with the advantage becoming greater the higher the power-to-weight ratio of the cars in question.

You so got him. A friend in high school wouldn't leave me alone til I spanked him by a couple car lengths in my 95' caddy touring Seville with the 300 hp 4.7l l37. I OWNED the roads (including lt1's)in that grocery getter; they would FLY!

No offense, but if you beat him in a stock Northstar Caddy, he was a NA model with FWD, not a AWD VR4.

Back to the topic, you can drive, you have got him. THe extra power is enough to trump his AWD by a large margin, as long as you can use it.
