Anyone with a Built 6L80 Happy with it?

I have read that a lot of people are doing a 4L80 swap and those with a built 6L80 are not happy with it. I have to make a decision on what to do and would like to keep the 6 speed. I don't want to loose cruise control or give up better mileage if I can get the 6L80 built to handle 600 Ft lbs rear wheel torque. Anyone with a built 6L80 happy with it? Did you buy a built transmission or buy the parts and have someone local build it? If you bought a built one where did you get it?

I had a built 6l80e. After almost every track day it was being pulled apart due to a failure. I payed a ton if money and it was bring so called freshened up almost weekly. Biggest mistake I've made. Added a little nitrous and forget it.Anything above 700 rwhp you are pushing it.

There seem to be a lot of reputable companies out there offering built 6L80's. If they can't hold the power why are they still being offered?

Beats me. My car was between 700-800 rwhp. They are rated for 1200 rwhp but I had zero luck. A few times it made it home and not broken but more often than not is was hurt. Plenty of witnesses. Thus the turbo 400 I'm running now.

Built and tuned right, they will hold well over 800 rwhp.

I built my own with the phoenix kit, and tuned it. If its not tuned right it will not last. Built or not.

I would like to hear from someone who had one built right and is happy. A lot of the posts with problems are several years old and I expect many of the people who decided to go with 4L80 conversions did so because of problems awhile ago. I am curious if more available parts and more experience is making a built 6L80 a reliable option today.

I , and my car, developed the Phoenix kits. Lots of wasted 8 hr round trips for one pass. So if Ryan is having good luck with it then the parts are prob good. My trans would have some stints of being ok but the last 12 months is was out of the car more than it was in. For 6-700 rwhp I'd think you'd be fine.

I had a local builder rebuild mine while making the decision on what parts to upgrade myself. Second summer with it now and no issue to date. Not to many track runs on it but plenty of hard street usage. I will be running it more at the track later in the season and I guess then I will see how well it really holds up.
My plan is to pull it every second season (this winter) and refresh the clutches and steels. I consider this just routine maintenance when running these power levels, and cost is minimal. I believe the hard parts will be fine.
I tune the trans myself.

Thanks for the input, but these are not exactly glowing recommendations for building a
6L80? No one out there as had one built with no problems? I don't want to have to pull my transmission every two years to replace clutches. I know of two reputable shops, Rossler being one, that will no longer work on them.

Depends totally on the power level and usage. I have friends with 4L80's, big power and heavy 1/4 mile duty. They get them refreshed every few seasons also.
If you are talking about street use, and moderate power, you should have no issues as long as temps are controlled and the tune is right.

I have one built by Century transmissions in Houston TX and It took a while to get the tune right but I have had no problems now Im only pushing 440 to the wheels so I shouldnt have any problems. I lost my stocker and wanted to upgrade it for future. So far so good and not sure what parts they used.

If you want a six-speed auto that can handle high HP you could get one of these http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l80e.htm

I built mine, and it is holding great, 7000-7500 rpm and depending on what shot I was spring on grudge nights I was in the 700-800 rwhp range.

I love mine. I do all of our trans builds in house here.

Your tuner needs to know your clutch stackup and how to modify the tables to accommodate the changes.
