Exclamation Will the Camaro last past 2016?

If you didn't see, Obama unveiled the new Emissions and mileage standards today. All cars must get 35+ MPG by 2016. Does this mean the death of the Camaro? Death of SUV's? Death of all American sports cars? I hope we won't end up driving Fiat 500's and electric Mini's from now on.

I am wondering the same thing. I heard light duty trucks and SUV must get 30 mpg and cars must get 39 mpg for an average of 35.5. I don't see the Camaro getting 39 mpg.

The Camaro will probably have a turbo 4 and be a hell of a lot lighter.

The technology already exists. It's just not being mass produced to be economical. This will push the car makers to go mass prod with cars that can get that mileage.

But I am relieved I ordered my SS already!

Drive an HHR SS and you may be looking at the future in terms of high performance vehicles.

I drove on last fall. Unfortunately my shoulders are too wide and it was uncomfortable for me. But dayum, that thing was quick!

This is incorrect.

First off, the standards mandate a corporate average. Some models can be below this average as long as others are above it.

Second, falling below the average isn't illegal, it just results in a fine. Manufacturers don't like to pay the fines, but these standards in themselves cannot prevent the manufacture of a car.

Third, CAFE standards are based on internal EPA numbers. These numbers haven't appeared on window sticker since 1984. Beginning in 1985 the publicly displayed city figure was reduced by 10 percent and the highway figure was reduced by 22 percent. Beginning in 2008 these already reduced figures were further reduced by changing the formula to better approximate real-world driving.

So the Camaro is already much closer to the proposed figures than is evident from the MPG figures on its window sticker.

I believe the last Camaro on the present platform is 2014, after that it would go to a new/ other smaller platform, so probably lighter and NO V-8, get your V-8's while you can.

Great another CAFE thread...

No in the year 2013 Skynet (govt census super computer) became self aware and started to destroy all Camaro's and other sports cars. They where converted into terminators.

For most manufacturers, these changes will likely mean performance cars will be more expensive, have a greater emphasis on low weight and better handling, and perhaps fewer choices. We might see a period where technology lags behind regulations so performance might die down for a while, but in time performance will come back and manage to coexist with arbitrary, oppressive, and unconstitutional government regulations.

Government Motors, on the other hand, is, as the name implies, controlled by the government and therefore is subject to the whims of environmental wackos and the PC police. Fun will be absolutely out of the equation as GM is re-purposed to crank out highly subsidized transportation appliances.
