manuel paddle shifters vs. auto

i have the v6 auto with paddle shifters and after filling it up
I thought it would be fun to try out the paddle shifters
curious i also reset my mpg monitor.
usually with auto i get 17-19 mpg in the city
today (driving up all the hills in my city), with paddle shifters,
full heavy tank as well, I managed to top out at 23 mpg and lowest at 21.
i was shifting around 2,000-2,500 rpms

Is this normal?
I would like to hear what others have to say about it.

that dropped the R off the "camry" lettering so we all call it a "camy".

Did you get the hurst paddle shifter I'd like to know if you are comfortable using it ,some say it's too big and makes it hard to reach the knobs behind it,is that true?

I just can't get into the paddle shifters for some reason.

The only time I've really used them is when I want to go from 1/2 to 2/3 gear before it does so automatically.

yea it sounds right, I mean if you're swithing gears at low end rpms then your engine isn't working as hard and in result using less fuel.

try it on the highway, I felt the same way until I was hitting high speeds and down shifting to pass people. I have a blast with them.

It usually takes 4-5 days to get a TRUE reading on your MPGs..I can reset mine after I fill up and be getting 32 mpg...check it again in a few days and I'm at 25.9..

As far as the transmission auto shifting, mine will only auto - downshift. As far as auto up shift that it does not do. I enjoy using the paddle shift although on corners it can be difficult. As far as gas mileage improvement over standard I have not seen that much of an increase. It may be I am accelerating to swiftly to gain any extra MPG's.

I'm using the paddles all of the time. I keep the rev's around 2,000 most of the time and rarely over 3,000 on accelerations. I like the paddles even with all the critics as for the acces when turning. On D mode the car goes to 4th gear too soon and IMO I beleive that is costing more gas.

I have the L99 and use them all the time. Went from a Z06 to the Camaro SS w/ Auto. For those that think in order to have a "true" muscle or sports car you need the manual trans, have probably never sat in traffic with a 6 speed and a clutch. I can shift the auto 6 faster than I could the 6 speed on the Z06 and the clutch and shifter were muche better on that car. The clutch on the LS3 Camaro is like a farmall M...
