gas mileage

I've had my car for a few weeks now and I kept my foot in it in for the first couple of tanks of gas, of course, but now I'm trying to get gas mileage however the best I've gotten on the last two tanks was around 22 mpg and my commute is almost all highway. I really wanted to see if I could get that 28 on the sticker but I haven't even come close and I'm doing worse than the 98 automatic 3.8l firebird that I just sold was getting at 24 mpg. My camaro is a manual 3.6l and I have been making an effort to keep it in the highest gear I can unless I need power to pass and even then I'm not stomping on it, ok well at least not all the time. What kind of mileage are you getting on your 3.6l?

you wont avg 28 mpg for a full tank, that is the mpg's youll get while driving on a highway but there is always side streets and lights to get to or from the highway. you should get around 24-26 on a tank of gas if driving like granny. funny thing is my LS1 Trans Am gets same gas mileage as the V6 5th gens...on a long trip (260 miles) i got 27 mpg! normally i get 22-24 and i dont drive it like granny just have a lot of 2 lane highways here that are 55 mph and then you hit some little town and slow to 30 for a fe and then right back to 55.

I drove my manual ss to georgia yesterday and averaged 25.6 mpg for two tank fulls. Seems like something wierd is going on in the v6 world.

I have been getting about 29 to 30 per tank. I do 99% highway driving.
I also have a different exhaust, which at least is lighter, and have added a K&N high flow air filter.

Hope to put a CAI in sometime soon.

I have an SS and I average 20-22, but can get 24-25 on HWY only stretches.

I have driven my GF's V6 model and gotten 31 MPG over a 200 mile hwy trip.

The reason you are getting 22 is because you are driving 70+... If I wrong, I am sorry I assumed..... but yes, if you drive the V6, and go north of 60MPH, you will lose MPG very quickly.

On the interstate, running 80MPH, my SS gets better MPG than her V6 because its not having to work as hard as her car does

+1 I get about 21MPG AVG after a tank of gas commuting to and from work, which is mainly highway but includes traffic and non-hwy roads. I usually would keep my SS in 5th gear until around 70MPH otherwise going into sixth I feel i gotta put my foot into it with 0 passing ability.

I get the best mileage around 75-80mph as well.

I average 18.5 with half highway and half city driving. I've also got a heavy foot though so better mileage would be expected for normal driving.

Top end speed is part of the picture. Initial accerleration is another part of the picture. Engine speed is a big part of overall mpg. How much do you have to brake? Do you coast to a red light or speed up to a red light and stop fast. Lots of factors play in the mpg calculations. If you really want to see how good mpg is, keep your rpm under 2k. Personal driving style makes all the difference from person to person.

I can get 25mpg in my 6spd SS city driving. Sloooooow going though!

I have a V6 Auto and on a 1,400 mile road trip (used cruise control) I averaged 26.6. I spend several days in my destination (city driving). The last leg, which was all highway except for the last 10 miles I got 29.09. I'm using mine for a daily driver now the weather is nice and my commute is mostly highway and I averaged 24.68 on the last tank. I use Drive for my commute, but Sport mode on weekends when I'm running errands and stuff.
