Rear view camera
Wondering if anyone has come out with a rearview camera that is built into the rear view mirror yet. I did a search and got some results but they were mostly eye sores and not what I would want to put in my car. My buddy just got an Avalon and hes got a backup cam that comes on when he goes into reverse and it displays in the rearview mirror. It also has a thing on there that shows you different lines (green for and red for when you get too close to something.) So I'm just curious if anyone aftermarket has made something similar that would work for the camaro.

Japanese Camaro accessories...but check out the video pics about the camera.
I'm guessing this is just an aftermarket deal for Camaros in Japan. Units sell for around $500 U.S. best I can find. Not sure if the optional truck/SUV mirror cam would be easy to do for the Camaro though.

Yea I dont want to have something like that taking up dash space, or any other space for that matter thats why Id like one thats built into a rear view mirror so I can replace the factory mirror. But the video has what Im talking about, about those green and red lines. I really didnt think itd be this hard to find something.

The camera I bought has the distance markers on it (the little colored Lines). The install I did does not use a mirror, but it's very unobtrusive, and you could easily install the monitor next to your onstar mirror if you want. And since it's so small, it does not look out of place. I did a test fit there, but preferred it on the back decksince I always turn around to back up, wnd it made install way easier.
Here is the DIY thread I did that has the parts I used... You can do it for about $125 and have an extra POS camera to sell on ebay. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108846 |

Yours might be the best bet in the end, plus its only $50 which is great as well. I didnt read thru the whole thing, just skimmed, and so I assume you tapped the rear wire so the monitor comes on when the car is put into reverse? Or do you have the monitor running whenever the car is on?
EDIT NVM I just read more and saw that you do state it only comes on when car is in reverse. Thanks! |

The only problem with the Mito and Escort mirrors is that you either lose Onstar, or you need to disassemble the OEM mirror, and relocate the Onstar buttons.... I have seen pics here from owners who have done this, and it does not look bad at all, but obviously a much bigger PITA than just running in a separate monitor.

Yea, true. I highly doubt Im going to keep OnStar after the 6 months though, its just too expensive and I wouldnt need it.

I just rented a car on a business trip that had Onstar and the Backup camera in the mirror. It was a new GMC Yukon.
I wonder if we could put that mirror into the camaro??? |

Therewas a thread a few months ago about thtat and someone posted the schematics for the mirror...the GM oem mirror doesn't use a simple video line like he aftermarkets do, making it appear to be much harder than an aftermarket solution
