2016 Sturgis Camaro Rally
Sturgis is known as one of the biggest Harley Davidson meets in the world every year. Our goal is to show everyone that Sturgis isn't just for motorcycles anymore. What started as a local show with around 20 cars has boomed into a national event with around 300 cars last year and looking to be even bigger this year. All makes/models welcome, full out race cars to completely stock daily driver.

Outstanding, let me say that the last two years (2014, 2015) that I attended were great. Coming from SLC to Sturgis is about a 10 hour commit one way. We rented a local house for many of us (about 7 vehicles to support) and that made it fantastic.
I will comment that the wife and I have decided NOT to attend this year, solely based on the evolution of the event. Quite frankly, we haven't seen it progress to offer more vendor participation, more and varied events and finally, "group gropes" are minimal and not planned well. (Shared activity). It kind of makes the Sturgis trip for us, limited to what we can find to do within the vicinity and limited to what our group wants to do. Anyway, no way intended to take away from the event, just stating what our observations were over the last two years. Have a great time and we'll keep our eyes open to evolution of the event. -Dane

Thanks for the info, unfortunately it is hard to grow when people don't come back LOL. Big shows that are out there usually have people dedicated to developing the show(AKA their actual job) and are backed by a major sponsor close to a big race track. Unfortunately for us being located in South Dakota, there is no big track within 6 hours let alone most people do not even know where South Dakota is ( yep, for those that don't know its that small. population wise) Our show is supported by a small group of volunteers (8-12) that work 40+ a week in an everyday job and pull this together within our spare time with the only incentive being our love for cars. Trust me when I tell you the planning for this years event started in September and will continue until about the first week of June. Filing for permits etc takes time and we are limited to what can be done by the mere space and by the city. I would love nothing more then to get out of the military and work on this thing full time. Build a big autocross track /drag strip and bring in the kind of numbers you see at a Super Chevy show but that is just not possible without the a major corporate sponsor that is just not going to happen LOL. Group activities are outlined in a booklet that EVERY registered member receives when they get to the registration tables. They get told by every committee member that there is a set time for each event. (Dinners, committee led cruises/ poker runs), pub crawl, show and shine parking times, Loud pipes/Burn out contest, etc) The downside to this is no matter how many times you tell people to review the booklet about 15% actually read it. There are many other things we as a group have thought about doing but due to time constraints, the limited amount of us, and sponsors we have to set a limit. Event sponsors are just that. They donate money to the rally to help with the required permits and insurance, but we (the committee) manage the event. With the exception of the great group from JDP Motorsports and the local crew at the drag strip. Can't say enough about either, if it wasn't for Jordan and the guys from JDP the autocross would be a cluster. The crew that helps set up the drag strip also helps us out a ton. But overall these limits are basically decided based on inputs we receive from the previous year via email or just by talking to as many people as possible throughout the event. Take last year, we were looking for different way to judge cars during the show and shine. Many people really liked the peoples votes over actual hiring of judges. Many did not and felt that it would turn into a popularity contest. At the end of the day some still felt that it was a popularity contest but our biggest group (CCOTR) only ended up with one winner in one class.

Any recommendations on where to stay? Am I too late to the game to get a decently close room? Plan on coming from central Wisconsin.

Yeah there are plenty of rooms around, in Sturgis, Deadwood, Spearfish etc. Host hotel is Holiday Inn Express in Sturgis, usually sold out rather quick. From what I hear prices are not to bad most places, Holiday Inn is crazy high LOL but there is a good crew that stays there and its ALOT of fun.

not sure what groups will be coming through Billings. Best bet is to check FB pages of Camaro groups.
