What matters; HP or TQ?

I have seen guys that are blown/tt'd with high hp numbers and low tq numbers and vice versa on the different dynos...I want to know what matters; is it the tq or just hp?

They mean different things... Torque is the actual mechanical power that gets transferred to the wheels. Horsepower is a measure of torque with respect to engine speed, if I understand it. Torque always matters - it's the actual power. Horsepower is more for talking... short and vague explanation.

Torque. Cannot have HP without torque. You want to build as much torque as you can and carry it as high as you can in rpm. HP is figured off of torque. You measure torque and then figure HP.

Ok this makes alot of sense...I was comparing the last dyno sheet with the new one which triggered my question...

Torque gets you going quick, HP gets you going faster.

Correct which is why dyno graphs cross at 5252rpm.because that's the constant in the equation.

Read it, understand it and don't let a bunch of old sayings trap you in a vortex of misunderstanding.
  • You can have torque at zero RPMs.
  • Force without movement is not work
  • The faster you do work the more power you generate
  • Moving a car requires work, to do it faster requires more power.

Rocket engines can produce a lot of horse power with no torque.

Carrol Shelby once said torque wins races horsepower sells cars. When you have a heavy car to get moving some good torque would be nice.

They produce thrust though. Similar concept to torque - in that it's the force that effectively moves the object.
