Third gear whining noise--need feedback

I have a manual transmission, and when I go into third gear I can hear a whine from the trans. It only does it in third gear. None of the other gears make any noise at all. Transmission shifts smooth, but I have noticed that I can almost shift into reverse from fourth gear it's almost like the lockout isn't engaged. Any input would be appreciated.
