Hand painting Bowtie

Wild Idea Time:

Has anyone thought of custom painting the Bowties by hand while still on the car?

Here's my thinking:
1. Mask off the surrounding paint(rear)/grill(front) for about 4 inches.
2. Using one of those sanding sponges, rough up the chrome & insert
3. Using a camel hair art brush (not a big home depot one!) paint the emblem with a thinned version of the chosen color of touchup paint.
4. Let dry.
5. remove masking.

The paint needs to be thinned to allow it to flow smoothly and not show brush strokes. Not sure what today's touchup paint would be thinned with.

The idea came to me when looking closely at the Emblem on the T2 Bumblebee compared to the vinyl overlays for sale. My son asked if I could do the exact style from the movie. The overlays have the red outline inside the surround, while the actual emblem has the flat edge of the surround painted red. The insert is 100% black. So the options are (a) buying a set painted by Gary, which all have the red outline on the insert, (b) buying vinyl overlays and still needing to paint the chrome, or (c) painting the emblem myself.

I hate the idea of removing the back emblem and trying to get it back on perfect, so I tried to think of an alternative. There was no way in hell I was going to use a spray can anywhere near my car, so then I thought about trying it by hand. I used to use a similar technique YEARS ago painting models and such. Used the thinner to avoid brush strokes and worked perfect. So why not try it on this?

So, before this weekend, I figured I'd toss it out and get thoughts and opinions before I started. Maybe catch some "gotchas" before I do them.

Thoughts???

Hmmm. not much response.

Either it's a very bad idea, or y'all think I'm crazy.

So which is it? I'm planning on talking to the body shop and asking about the paint tomorrow.

if you arent spraying it why not. spraying it i would make sure its masked off well. I mean probably save you some money some people charge a rediculous amount to paint them on this website. Worst cast by new ones for 30 bucks

Don't do it !

Man don't do it by hand. New car needs a quality job not a jerry rigged paint job (eyesore) for sure. No amount of thinner will compensate for a spray job done properly. Had Gary spray mine and they are awesome. Can't go wrong with his work.Do it right the first time .
