I don't know why it would crack after you sprayed it with the Rustoleum. Sanding it wouldn't have made it crack, neither would your cleaning mixture as long it was completely dry before painting it and there was no dishwashing soap residue left on the cover. However, I might know why it cracked after you clear coated it. Did you use a lacquer clear coat over top of enamel? If so, this would cause the cracking immediately. If you use enamel Rustoleum then you have to use enamel clear coat.

What type of bolts or screws is everyone using in their cover? Where did you get them?

I went to Lowes and bought "Truss Washer Lath Self Drill" in a 8x1/2 size. They only came in a box of 100 so I have plenty left over. To bad you aren't local or I would just give you some.

caverman I will look for those at Lowes here. Also who is this lady who does the lettering. You should tell her to jump on here and I bet she would get some more sales cause I want the lettering as well.

I got the same ones. But I used my dremel and cut off the shafts then used auto trim adhesive to clue them in place. Didn't feel right putting holes in the cover - GM engineers do things for a reason.

Pics when I get the embossed "V8" area the way I like it. It's a bugger.

This looks really cool with a bright color car, but has anyone do this with a dark color? I have IBM and I'm thinking of painting over the black part and leaving the silver since I think it would look wierd with dark blue and back. I'd like to see some pictures of it first if anyone's tried it...

Thinking of taking on this project this weekend. One question I have is are there any issues of driving without the engine cover on?

Not at all. As a matter a fact most people take it off when they go racing because it will hold in some heat. It's just a cosmetic cover. It has no functionality for the drivetrain.

Thanks for all the tips! I pulled my cover off last night and will be buying some paint today. Any experience with which paint matches best for rally yellow? I'll be doing this with my 7 year old daughter on my birthday today...great gift to myself and teaching my daughter the love of a camaro at a young age...what could be better!

I used Krylon Fusion for plastic. Color is Sunbeam/Safety yellow. Very close match.

Thanks, but I'm not done yet! Waiting on an emblem to come in to put on top of the metal mesh I put over the old "V8."
