Here's the finished project.

....No, that's not overspray on the intake tube, it's pollen.

Nice job!
It's gratifying knowing you did it yourself and saved $300

Great thread guys. I followed your lead and painted mine to match my SW. this is "phase 1" - I plan on adding the bolts and an SS or LS3 emblem to cover up the V8 soon.

Question though - based on some previous posts - is it safe to use a clear coat on the of the rustoleum plastic paint? If so, which ones did you guys use successfully without it cracking? I saw a can of rustoleum clear gloss, but was nervous about trying it after some had issues. Also, how would it look to just cover the whole engine cover in it? I'd like to 'gloss up' the flat black parts as well, and avoid 2 hours of masking again

Looks nice!

I used clear rustoleum but I did it within the first hour of putting on the paint. I would say you can do it without issues but I would read the can of your white that you used and wait the maximum dry time before spraying the clear.

Personally I think the flat black helps to off set the main color so I personally wouldn't clear the whole thing but it probably whoudn't be all that bad if you did. It's all a personal preference. Keep us posted.

Here lately I've had a few PMs asking me about the size of the screws I used on my engine cover so I thought I would go ahead and post the info here.

I went to Lowes (or any hardware store) and bought some 8 X 1/2 Self Tapping Drill Screws. They say "Truss Washer Lath Self Drill" on the box. The smallest box they had was 100 count.

First I tried creating a starter whole but found that the faster way was to just holding it in the center, drilling it about 70% through, and then clearing the plastic that comes up out of the way.

The screw isn't long enough to come through the padding on the underside of the cover. You don't even feel it when you rub over the padding so don't worry about it touching the coil packs.

Thanks for the compliments that I've received on the cover.....

Is it a brand new roll? What brand did you use? Try the 3M brand.

I didn't have any issues with mine stickig.

No problems here either. Try a fresh 3M roll.
