Tiny sound from steering wheel - normal?

Hey, I am new to Camaros and my Camaro SS 2012 has a low noise when turning the steering wheel. I am just assuming it is the powersteering that sounds a bit when it provides power. But I have the same on my Audi where you cannot hear it...

Is this normal behavior? Or should I have it checked on the warranty?

Let the car idle for 20 seconds to lower the rpm. Turn the wheel slightly. You will hear a faint grind comming from the steering wheel itself (not the tires).

I dunno what it is. Glad someone posted something about it.

Yeah that's exactly the situation I'm in... So it appears it is just normal behavior then.

While we are on the subject of steering wheel sounds, anyone else hear the faint whistle when idle? Turning the steering wheel will make it disappear. No one at the dealership could hear it and the mechanic gave a shady response saying that it was the fluid running over the rack and pinion. Not sure I buy it. Any thoughts?

Nothing that I've reflected over yet... Will see if I can notice tomorrow.

I have that, too. Sounds like a whirring noise.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2012 and newer models have electrically assisted power steering. There is an electric motor on the steering column. That's probably what you're hearing. There is no hydraulic fluid used in that system.

My previous 2011 SS did this as well, however, at the time I thought it was my CAI setup. It's not a destroyer of worlds, but once someone points it out to you, you will never unhear it

power steering belt slippage.........may try belt dressing? Old power steering units on old cars was a common problem with this.

My bad.

My steering column has been squeaking for a while now. I'm sure it's covered under warranty, but the dealer kept my car for four days the last time I had a warranty issue.

Welcome to the Camaro club!

I'm sorry to hear about the low noise you're hearing nickswe. If you want to get an official diagnosis at a certified GM dealership, please let me know. I'd be happy to schedule the appointment for you and monitor the repair process. Feel free to send me a private message with your intentions.

Regards,

William R.
