Lowering springs and rear gears V6 information

After much research i found the V8 Camaro was lowered roughly 3/4 inch lower then the V6. This meant when using EIbach springs If I used the V8 Eibach springs it would be close to the 1.5 inch drop springs Eibach decided not sale. Eibach was correct in stating a 1.5 drop was to much on a V8 but on the V6, since the struts have same travel distance a 1.5 drop can be achieved with new struts.

On ride smoothness the V8 springs will be a slightly stiffer ride but not by much since the springs are made to compensate for an additional 400 pounds, roughly 2 adults. Now one question I did not answer was on placement and yes the Placement of springs is identical. The result I had them installed on my RS about two weeks ago. Simple install, new alignment and they are great. They made a vast improvement on corning compared to stock springs.

Next up Rear gears. I was told the V6 and V8 gears are different. Well this is trus if you have a automatic V6 but if your V6 is a manual then the gears and axle shafts are identical to a V8. While the case is different further digging will show the important parts, inside guts, are the same. My Gm parts dealer and I spent a few hours comparing numbers and specs. When you match up a a SS camaro with a automatic 3.27 gears to the V6 manual 3.27 gears the ring and pinion are the same number so are the axle shafts. After that it gets easier since almost all numbers match between the V8 automatic and V8 manual rear end.

So now I can get gears but what about programming? I talked to SLP today and they are trying to get gear ratio changes into their V6 programmer, once that is done, ring and pinion swaps will be possible.

I added a picture of the camaro as an attachment. It was tough finding any of this information. On the pinion gear I was lucky my parts guy is real patient and willing to look into the questions i asked. It took some digging to find the numbers. On the springs Eibach just seemed like they did not want to give out begging and after height measurements from the wheels.

Heres the numbers:

The stock height of a v6 is 440mm while a V8 is 420. using V6 Eibach Lowering springs springs for a V6 spring drop is 406mm in front and 408 in the rear. using Eibach V8 lowering springs the spring drop is in front is 393mm while the rear is rear 398. Since the RS has same travel on struts and shocks as the V8 and placement was the same. I knew they would fit. Question was on ride. Eibach spring rates were V8 159-222 for front springs and 252-485 for the rear. The V6 spring rates were 159-191, front and 285-396 in the rear. In the end they are great now I just need the bigger sway bars to complete the package

Cool stuff...

As for programming... May want to check with Vince at Trifecta and see if he has access to the gear ratio... unless you are set on SLP/Diablo...

Also, has anyone checked in the the install price for gears in an IRS?

Now... can we swap a manual rear into an auto car? LOL

I test drove a 1LT @ City Chevy in Charlotte a few months back that had aftermarket (dealer) rims and tires and it had a noticeably bigger rear rim/tire setup. It made the stance and driver sitting angle more aggressive. I loved the feel and look!

So, did you ever swap gears? If so, what size?? Also, were you able to use V8 gears in your V6 M6 like you thought??

I got the part no's off a 3.27 limited slip diff. for sale on e-bay, 92246989 and plugged the no. into gm parts direct. bingo $919.xx that should be an entire center section with posi and gears set up from GM. now if I can get the #'s for the 3.45 lsd. should be about the same price. get lsd and a gear changefor the price of gears and install... if the axles fit as mentioned above.

As I understood it, the v6 cars with manual trans have compatable dif parts with the v8 cars and the v6 cars with auto do not....

V6 manual has limited slip like all the V8 cars, V6 auto just has a standard rear diff, (single slinger)

Now I wonder why the housing is different from V6 manual than V8 if the gears are the same?
