Gauging engine health by MPG

Hello everyone! Just got me 2015 1LE in ashen grey metallic. Loving the car!

I do have one concern. Advertized highway fuel consumption is 24MPG. Yet, driving around 75mph I'm getting around 21MPG. Athough I did not buy this car for fuel economy, low fuel consumption might be an indication that something is not perfect with the engine/sensors.

My previous car - 09 Mustang GT (yes, I switched... ) was also rated for 24MPG on the highway, yet I was getting 25 to 26MPG while cruising at 75-80mph. At 55 Mustang's MPG would get up to 29.

So the question I have is, has anyone tried measuring 1LE's fuel consumption while in cruise on the highway? Is 21MPG that I'm getting at 75ish about right, or did I get a lemon?

First, break it in. It's always going to get worse mileage before it's broken in.

Second, the 1LE is going to get worse mileage than the rating, because the rating is the same as the standard SS, yet the wheels/tires as well as additional aero stuff is going to hinder the mileage rating on the 1LE.

The only thing I use the MPG for like you're talking about, is if I see a large change in it from one tank to another that might signal a problem. As long as it stays similar, don't worry about it.

I average around 18 with mixed driving. When I drove to Vegas I averaged 83.6 MPH and I got 24.8MPG.

ForceFed is correct. The EPA rating is for the regular SS. When you add in our aero bits (front splitter, rear wing) as well as the wider front tires and stickier rubber, your mileage will suffer.

I have gotten 24mpg before, but that's keeping it right at 65mph and running my tires between 38 and 40 PSI cold.

Also usually most ratings are done for 60 mph highway, not 75mph.

We have seen things in the 23 range with the cruise set at 79 on the interstate. I have a life time average with mixed driving and playing of 18.3 with about 22,300 miles.I think you are fine and as others have said, you will see an improvement when it is broken in.

if it makes you feel any better, i still see 23mpg at 70 on the highway after intake/headers/cam/tune... ~21.5 if i up it to 80mph. and i'm perfectly happy with that

LOL at you guys.

Mine is a weekend toy, taken soley on short trips. I always let it warm up (since it is only driven for leisure), and I am usually pushing it moderately hard.

And I'm averaging about 15.5 MPG.

And I don't care. The car runs great

i'm doing about 19.5mpg..and perfectly happy with it.

don't forget our cars have 3.91 gears...
drop your speed at 60 or 55, you'll get your 24...

Thanks for the information everyone. Just trying to gauge my engine performance in relation to others, since highway mileage is typically very consistent. Mixed - city/highway miles is subjective, however, since it mostly dependent on the driver.

I remember getting 20+ mpg... That was before 5000 miles during my breakin.

I just cannot drive it that slow anymore. Usually see ~17MPG in mixed driving...

Ok
It's winter,or close to it
Any car will use slightly more fuel when it's this time of year
Fuel blends this time of year also affect it
Still new , break in period
Fuel costs nationwide are down

It's all good

Relax enjoy and stop worrying
