Attempt to Paint Engine Cover

Well, a year a go my wife opted out of ordering the car with the matching engine cover. Dealership said it would add 3 months to the delivery time. So, 12 months later, finally have the gutts to do it myself. Have been reading others DIY and feel pretty confident. Here we go!

First, I washed engine cover with mild dish soap. Wiped dry. Air dried with compressor.

Im going to use Rust Oleum's sunrise red. But first, I took 150 grit sandpaper, wrapped it around a rectangular object and used it to take the original finish off the "Chevrolet" revealing a satin black finish. A pretty simple process, I advise using an object with a short width, skinnier the width, the more precise you can be with the sanding. I went over the edges a couple time and scratch up areas I didnt need to. But no big deal because it will be covered in red soon. 15 minutes later I had both sides done. With working all week, and a new baby, im crunched for time. Im planning on having the Masking done tomorrow, might even paint. We will see. Would be nice to have it done before the Central Texas meet on Friday.

dude if you want to match the pain exactly there is a place in waco that mixes custom spray paint for 16.95 a can. Do a search for Carquest waco and it will come up. It is called NPI or something similar. It is carquests official paint shop.

Yea thats bada**! mine definately wont be so extravigant. Tested paint on fuse box today. Color looks good. Gonna paint cover tomorrow. Once im done, depending how it looks, ill decide to cut sections out of top and put mesh screens in place. Definately want to do the bolts for sure.

Looks good, gonna check on mine when I get home from work, Im thinking the 3 coats I put on it should leave a nice finish. Ive heard some people say that if you put a clear coat on top it could react with the paint and mess it up. Not sure if im willing to risk it. We will see.

So I took the tape off, and the cover looks great. Im still planning on sanding the "chevrolet" back down to reveal black letters. Just letting the paint settle a little longer. Also planning on going to home depot and getting some bolts to replace the fake ones.
