Advantages of Cold Air Intake

Can anyone tell me what exactly is the cold air intake system/filter? Is it expensive and what are the advantages of having one? Thanks in advance

It allows your motor to breath better, adds HP, looks cool, increases throttle response and all the cool kids have one! Looking at around $300 on up, unless you opt for a cheaper K&N, and they come highly recommended.

Edit: Almost forgot, it depeens your exhaust note as well.

Yes, I just put the K&N cold air intake on and it does look cool but sound and response is very noticeable.

5hp after 4,000Rpms. There eye candy. Other then that the power difference is in your head. Your car already an efficient intake stock. Put your 300dollars elsewhere

I believe your response is totally wrong. Have you looked at the testing Jannety did? There is another thread with it and if someone will post the link I'd appreciate it.

Don't believe everything you see on the internet my friend. I hang out at my dads buddys shop all the time who does dynos. Air intakes are little to nothing. And if anything the power is reached after 4grand

Is there a downside to a CAI ? I had one made by a major manufacturer on my 5th generation Corvette. I took the car to the dealer for a misfire. A coil pack was replaced and they told me I had a dirty "something", that they would clean for a few hundred dollars. When I did a searched , I found that this thing shouldn't need cleaning for many more miles.
Also, since some of the CAI's seem to need cleaning and oiling....I don't get it...clean lets trash through and oil is just dirty.

I'm going to have to side with Jannetty Racing on this one. Numerous companies have done independent testing (as well as posted dyno charts) showing that CAIs increase horsepower and torque. May I ask what brand of CAI your dad's buddy's shop tested? Did they do a before and after test on the same day? Did they alter the dyno settings in between testing? Was this open hood or closed? Was the car tuned?

No there is no downside to a CAI. Well unless increased horsepower and a new awesome sound is a downside.

Ive had 2 rotofabs. One on my '11 LT and now on my SS. I love them and def worth it. U can feel the performance increase and a deeper sound. I show my car and it def looks cool too. Check out my album here for pics of both. I bought my rotofab used from this site for $200 bucks. Only 4k miles plus the carbonfiber "ss" tube thats worth almost that much. Check out the classifieds here too.

Track tested a vararam, no gain maybe some loss in ET. Back to stock and added LT's. They ROCK!
