It may be a substance called COSMOLINE which is used as a corrosion protectant for the engine and transmission. It sometimes get oversprayed onto the manifolds and other close adjoining surfaces in the assembly process. It typically burns off after about a thousand miles and does have a heave odor of grease or oil burning.

I don't use an emergency brake on steep inclines either, I just know how to drive a stick
