It may be a substance called COSMOLINE which is used as a corrosion protectant for the engine and transmission. It sometimes get oversprayed onto the manifolds and other close adjoining surfaces in the assembly process. It typically burns off after about a thousand miles and does have a heave odor of grease or oil burning.

As far as a smooth take off from HSA, you just gotta learn your car and give it more power on the steep inclines and give it less power on the less steep ones. I don't use an emergency brake on steep inclines either, I just know how to drive a stick
