Dumb Power Steering Question
does the '10 camaro have hydralic or electric power steering? It is one of the few things I have yet to find out about the car.

I once drove a car with unassisted recirculating ball - a 1938 Pontiac.
No problems driving it actually - the steering wheel is so big it makes up for the lack of assist. Only problem was, to make a 90 degree turn, you had to turn the wheel about 5 full turns |

The electric steering on my VW is great.

Juice for the win. It's also got it's own cooler.
For now it's cheaper to mass produce hydraulic. As for reliable it's same as GM has had for a while, easy to work on and of course reliable. |

electric and hyd both have their drawbacks and benefits. hyd steering draws a parasitic loss off the motor (its normally the third highest energy loss in the car). add to that, the hyd pump press is directly proportional to engine speed (which is why most pumps have an orifice return to keep from overpressurizing). notice while at low speed its harder to turn the wheel than at higher speed? while this is nice for making high speed turns, its also a bad thing because sometimes you dont need to be able to crank the wheel all the way around at 90 mph. tho a way around that is the SpeedFeel system based off the Diravi system from Cintroen that has an auto centering feature and resistance based on vehicle speed. (so that you dont accidentally crank the wheel all the way around at high speed)

Hope it doesn't end up causing a further delay.

Electric is more efficient, keeps working if the engine stalls, is way easy to adjust (you can hook a computer to a VW to change the steering feel), is great for speed-sensitive steering, is simple and maintenance-free.
Hydraulic is classic technology that everyone is familiar/comfortable with, is available in off-the-shelf parts for large/heavy vehicles, works if the engine is running but electricity is unavailable (not going to happen on a modern car, computer needs electricity to keep it running), and may still be cheaper. I'm surprised, I thought it would have the Malibu's electric power steering.
