Why do "we" chase HP?
I have a 2010 Camaro SS 6spd manual. I wanted the manual because it would be fun to shift through the gears myself, but more importantly because I didn't want to lose 26HP with an automatic . And how many threads has there been where a person announces he or she traded in the 6 cylinder for a V8? And how many threads has there been with someone asking about HP gains with a cold air intake, or installing headers or a cam? I am guilty of it too.......I am going to call Livernois tomorrow and talk to Rich about their header/cam package. It's quite a drive to Michigan, but its a great price by a great shop and it will be well worth it for the increase in power (F U N). But then I ask myself....."Why?" The SS stock has more than enough HP to get speeding tickets, merge onto the highway, and intimidate 99% of the other cars on the road (not that I do). So why do I/we crave more HP? Is it a guy thing? I do like the sound of a cammed Camaro, but its a heck of a lot of cash to spend on sound. I keep waffling back and forth, but I think I won't stop thinking about it until I go ahead and do it!
I picture people looking my way when I drive by, my cammed IOM "SS" rumbling and gurgling.........yup money well spent!!! |

But to answer your question: I think we want more HP cause most of us bought the car for the thrill of acceleration and speed. The more the better. |

I think its part of the hobby aspect of ownership, mixed in with a competitive nature and mechanical aptitude...improvement in hp and performance can be made in a variety of ways as we choose. Always a fun thing to say you did it yourself.
Maybe its unavoidable...modifying and making engines more powerful has been going on since the beginning...if it didn't we'd all be driving 2010,11,12 Model T's!! lol |

Because you get used to the power and want more after awhile.

Horsepower is bragging rights. You may never use all the horsepower but it is nice to know you can.

My bank account really wishes it was 'a guy thing' but that is not the case. Although I have always been a speed junkie, it tends to be something more with the camaro. It is the sound, the feel of getting sucked back into the seat, the response and handling. Oh and it doesn't hurt to watch all the reactions when a lady in heels climbs out of the driver's seat, that's priceless.

Always good advice to take it to the track, etc...monster power is not "necessary" for the street....but to answer the "why", I suggest looking into the history of Craig Breedlove...and "The Spirit of America"...!
