3 quarts of oil burned

that is how much my SS burned in 800 miles....not good. It has 2400 miles on it....and only one oil change under its belt. No leaks anywhere. The dealer is having me bring it in every 500 miles. They are running an oil comsumption test, which I guess takes 4 visits. They are going to call
GM today to see if this is a known problem. Just thought I'd share....I'll report back when there is a solution.

Who changed your oil the first time?
Are you sure it was full to begin with?
It holds 8 quarts you know.

Ask them if they've checked the bulletins, cause there is a couple.

If you're going through that much oil that fast, you should be able to either see a puddle of oil underneath the car or see blue exhaust smoke.

It's going somewhere.

no puddle, but blue exhaust for sure....its definately internal. I'm sure they will find the cause, was just wondering if anyone knew what the bulletins through GM were.

Go to post #21 in this thread that lists the bulletins. Then open the pdf for PI0104A.

2011 2LT RS

i just my car 3 weeks ago and the salesman did tell me that i should check the oil around 1500 miles, i totally forgot and when i did check it at 3400 miles it was low nothing even registered on the dip stick. I called service and i was told that this was normal, he said the engine needed to break in and everything needed to seat. He did say that when i change the oil for the first service that i shouldnt happen again
Well i hope not because i think i will drive this car through that dealership window.

I agree it could possibly be bad oil rings or bad valve stem seals.
Definitley a internal engine problem obviously.
I sure hope you are using the correct weight of motor oil, correct
brand of motor oil,and correct amount of motor oil.If you have a current warranty a Chevrolet dealership service department will replace your LS3 engine under warranty if it is found to be faulty after inspection. If it were me I would only be running 5W30 Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil and a Mobil 1 oil filter every oil change aspecially in the LS3 platforms. Also I would be checking my motor oil level on my dipstick every one to two weeks.

First (being an old timer I guess we think this is standard for any driver to do but apparently not with todays generation) everyone no matter what car you own should be checking the oil every few fill-ups....especially with a new car that has not had the time for the rings to seat properly. I am just dumbfounded that most do not check there oil on a regular basis. I just had blood work done the other day and the nurse drawing the blood was telling me here 2007 envoy just stopped running and the garge she brought it to showed her it had run out of oil and the motor seized....I asked when she checked the oil last and she replied "I didn't know you were supposed to check oil!" .....So, I can't stress enough that YOU need to check your oil from time to time. Know what your car is doing....be aware.

Now, for the possible causes. Valve seals on a new engine failing are unlikely....but there are the occaisonally broken ring or defective piston that can cause excess oil consumption and a leak down test (not a compression test) will pinpoint the issue if that is the case....and GM should cover it under warranty no problem. The other known issue is the PCV baffel on the underside of the valley cover could be loose or defective pulling in oil directly into the intake air charge. Remove your throttle body and reach inside with a clean white rag or paper towel. All will have some ingestion (hence the need for a oil separating catchcan system) issues but it should not be soaked as this picture shows:

The other possibility (and yours sounds to severe for this) is most baby the car (as per the owners manual) during break-in and as the motors come with M1 syn from the factory it takes longer for the rings to seat properly.....sometimes never getting properly seated. (I run a good conventional oil with a zinc phosphate additive during the break in of our engines and run them hard after the first 100 miles or so and then change to full syn after 500 or so break in miles.

Keep us informed on what the dealer finds.
