If the vehicle has the 3.6L V6 engine
(VIN Code V), use regular unleaded
gasoline with a posted octane rating
of 87 or higher. If the octane rating is
less than 87, you might notice an
audible knocking noise when you
drive, commonly referred to as spark
knock. If this occurs, use a gasoline
rated at 87 octane or higher as soon
as possible. If you are using gasoline
rated at 87 octane or higher and you
hear heavy knocking, the engine
needs service.
If the vehicle has the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code W) or the 6.2L V8 engine
(VIN Code J),
use premium unleaded
gasoline with a posted octane
rating of 91 or higher. For best
performance, use premium unleaded
gasoline with a posted octane
rating of 93. You can also use
regular unleaded gasoline rated at
87 octane or higher, but the vehicle’s
acceleration could be slightly
reduced, and you might notice a
slight audible knocking noise,
commonly referred to as a spark
knock. If the octane is less than 87,
you might notice a heavy knocking
noise when you drive. If this occurs,
use a gasoline rated at 87 octane
or higher as soon as possible.
Otherwise, you could damage the
engine.
If you are using gasoline
rated at 87 octane or higher and you
hear heavy knocking, the engine
needs service.
So as i read it i can run 87 all day long, As i land developer and home builder i read things like this all day long, and now what it is saying

+1 I also would like to see this. Its all he said she said. I can post proof that octane has no effect on MPG's.

At the Pump: Use the Octane Level You Need

* Your owner’s manual recommends the most effective octane level for your car. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit. Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher octane gasoline is a waste of money.

Heck, you said yourself that you know it causes the engine to pull its timing - that's something that will ALWAYS cost you power as a direct & unavoidable effect.
That only true if it pulls timing on a grade of gas that needs to run with higher timing. Do you understand how the 4 strokes work?

Show me hard facts, ie; government proven data, statistics, graphs, or dyno sheets. Its all word of mouth and rumors.

irocnroll, your posted "proof" is that using higher octane than the manufacturer recommends is not beneficial. It's irrelevant because we're talking about using exactly what the manufacturer does recommend.

Look up and if you read what you posted you will see only a Recommended Fuel but no proof.

Apparently not. You haven't offered a shred of evidence yet.

It does say it can run 87, but it recommends 93. I take that to mean "in a pinch fill it with 87, but be careful for knocking."

The only time you should be upgrading to a higher level is if your engine is knocking. If it isnt knocking at a lower Octane level then you are just tossing your money out the window paying for a higher Octane. The higher octane is not offering you any benefit. But if you get that warm fuzzy feeling shelling out the extra 15-20cents a gallon, go for it.

All in all I think 2SSRS makes a valid point. I think people who are willing to experiment should let the rest of us know what they experience running at lower octanes. It may not be hard proof, but I think it is the best we are going to get.

I do enjoy saving money, means I can upgrade my Camaro even more!

I personally am too afraid to run 87 all the time. I budgeted the premium gas cost before I bought the car, so if I can't run 87 I'm not too worried about it. I anticipated the increased fuel cost, and I anticipate premium fuel going up a few more dollars. I think a lot of people did this when they decided to purchase the SS Camaro or one of the 6 bangers.
