Why has the Camaro Price Gouging suddenly stopped?
Funny because I have been watching the market for these cars for months and struggled to get a car below MSRP. Now I could easily get a fair deal of course after I already bought one.
Ebay at any given time has 150+ cars and up until a few weeks ago every one was listed for 40K+++++ I only check SS/RS not LT's. I viewed Ebay and online dealer listings and now you see cars listed for MSRP and less. Mid to low 30k range which is normal. I wonder if the hype stopped once they televised the Ultimate Factory show which revealed how many of these cars are being made and it sorta woke people up including dealers? Anyone else notice this sudden change? |

Most likely the Camaro is considered a summer or warm weather car. That leads to expected demand drops and lower winter pricing. Check comparable northern vs. southern states and you will notice a major tendency towards the warmer climates in distribution.

This happens anytime a new car comes out that is in demand. Once the initial rush is over the prices come back to normal.

I really dont believe the price gouging was ever as bad as everyone made it seem, i mean yeah there may be an extra thousand or so tacked on here or there but in all honesty there's a perfectly reasonable explanation why all SS Camaros are so expensive...this site already did a whole article on how a VERY large majority of all Camaros built have been 2SS, not just SS but 2SS with all the frills and luxury and stuff and those run around $37k with nothing added at all, so throw in an Auto tranny, power sun roof, and RS package and that EASILY tops $40k...i really dont think there was ever a whole lot of price gouging i just think people were mis-informed, lol

One local dealer to me is still insisting on a 10k markup even though there are two other dealers near me offering at MSRP minus any other discounts I might have. Not all dealers have a clue.

My concern are prices dropping too fast that we are being screwed by GMAC.
Hey I didnt even rush when it came out I got mine last night. I thought about the winter factor but other cars are still in high demand believe it or not even drop tops because not every area suffers a winter with snow. As far as timing of me noticing this it was 48 hours after the Ultimate Factory Telecast. Coincidence or not I sorta linked them together. As for gouging let just say 4 local dealers in NY were at these levels. 1. 2k over MSRP 2.4-5k over MSRP 3.6k over mSRP 4. 10k over MSRP plus they would not even allow a test drive. Anyone need the name I will post it up I hate these guys. Not chump change during a recession. its just principal i was happier buying far away and paying transport fees than giving more money to a dealer for screwing me to me face. |

For the people that payed over MSRP and now regret it... you knew what you were doing. You knew what the car should go for. Consider the extra amount as the cost for having the car when you wanted it and leave it at that.

My local dealer is at 8K over MSRP thats why I went to Phillips Chevy 35 miles away and picked one up at GMS.

People who payed MSRP or more knew or should have known they were paying a premium to be in the first tier of owners. Not something I would do but if you can afford it, what the heck why not. I just posted yesteday that there are dealers in my area selling new ones for 1000.00 to 1500.00 below MSRP. I'm in the midwest. they don't want to hold these cars all winter. Soon you should be able to buy these cars with normal discounts and after that at some time rebates and incentives will come just like with the Mustang. At one time this summer you could get almost 7K off MSRP on a Mustang GT. This could easily happen to the Camaro as well in fact it should happen in this economy and market. Remember, most of the pent up demand has been satisfied and a lot of the buyers from this point on will want and expect better deals or they will buy something else. This will also effect the price of used Camaro's which is what I intend to buy. I keep saying it, a loaded gently used 2SS auto with less tha 15k miles on it for around 28K, Very doable by next summer.

Intertemporal price discrimination accounts for most of the price drop. High-value consumers not willing to wait will pay more than low-value consumers who are willing to wait.
...as others have said, but... One thing not noted yet that I believe at play is an inward shift in the demand curve. With the massive loss of jobs this year the demand curve has shifted much more than expected, not along the curve I'm sure the GM analyst expected, but a shift OF the curve. |

I wouldnt say it has suddenly stopped but when dealers start getting units sitting on their lots they have to deal to sell. Just look at all the ones on fleabay. Plenty to go around.
