Does a ZL1 Warranty cover track use?

I was at the drealer I purchased my ZL1 from the other day, and got in to a conversation with one of the service guys.

He asked me if I opened her up yet?? I said not yet but I will take it to the strip at least once to see what it will do. he said don't break it cuz parts are expensive...i thought the warranty did cover track use (with-in reason and no mods).

Can anyone give me confirmation??

Thank you!! I trust C5 members more than him...

It's been stated numerous times that track use should be covered. It has a lap timer built into the DIC. No reason you shouldn't be covered at the track as long as you follow their break-in and service items in the manual.

EDIT: Added some sections of the manual that talk about tracking your car.

For vehicles with this gauge, it is
near the shift lever and indicates
engine oil temperature. If the
gauge pointed moves to the higher
end of the gauge, the engine oil
temperature is operating hotter than
normal. It is acceptable if this
happens during aggressive driving
or racetrack usage
. The DIC will
display a warning message if the
engine oil temperature exceeds an
acceptable level.

This gauge indicates the engine
coolant temperature. If the gauge
pointer moved to the H or the
shaded area, the engine coolant is
operating hotter than normal. It is
acceptable if this happens during
aggressive driving or racetrack
usage
. The DIC will display a
warning message if the engine oil
temperature exceeds an acceptable
level.

PERF TRACTION 1 – WET
ACTIVE HANDLING ON
SUSPENSION MODE TOUR
(ZL1 Only)
This message displays when this
Performance Traction Management
mode is selected. The instrument
panel cluster light will also be on
when this mode is selected. Once
this message is acknowledged,
PTM1 – WET ESC = ON displays
on the bottom of the digital speed
page. Launch Control is available
when this mode is selected. In this
mode, the Traction Control and
Active Handling System are
available but intended for use on
wet race track conditions
. Adjust
your driving accordingly.

Racing/Track Brake Burnish
Procedure
Notice: Brake pedal fade will
occur during this track burnish
procedure and can cause brake
pedal travel and force to increase.
This could extend stopping
distance until the brakes are fully
burnished.
1. Apply the brake 25 times starting
100 km/h (60 mph) to 50 km/h
(30 mph) while decelerating at
0.4 g. This is a medium brake
application. Drive for at least
1 km (0.6 mi) between applying
the brake. This first step may be
skipped if there are more than
200 miles (320 km) on the
brake pads.
2. Repeatedly apply the brakes
from 100 km/h (60 mph) to
25 km/h (15 mph) while
decelerating at 0.8 g. This is a
hard brake application, without
activating the antilock brake
system (ABS). Drive for at least
1 km (0.6 mi) between stops.
Repeat until the brake pedal
travel starts to increase.
Depending on conditions, this
should take no longer than
25 brake applications.
3. Cool down: Drive at 100 km/h
(60 mph) for approximately
15 km (10 mi) without using
brakes.
4. Apply the brake 25 times from
100 km/h (60 mph) to 50 km/h
(30 mph) while decelerating at
0.4 g. This is a medium brake
application. Drive for at least
1 km (0.6 mi) between
applications.

Competitive Driving Mode
Competitive Driving Mode,
Performance Traction Management
(PTM), and Launch Control are
systems designed to allow
increased performance while
accelerating and/or cornering. This
is accomplished by regulating and
optimizing the engine, brakes, and
suspension performance. These
modes are for use at a closed
course race track and are not
intended for use on public roads.
They will not compensate for a
driver’s inexperience or lack of
familiarity with the race track.
Drivers who prefer to allow the
system to have more control of the
engine, brake, and suspension are
advised to turn the normal TCS and
StabiliTrak systems on.

Performance Traction
Management (PTM) (ZL1 Only)
PTM integrates the TCS,
StabiliTrak, and Selective Ride
Control systems to provide
improved and consistent
performance when cornering. The
amount of available engine power is
based on the mode selected, track
conditions, driver skill, and the
radius of each corner.
PERF TRACTION 2 – DRY /
ACTIVE HANDLING ON
. For use by less experienced
drivers or while learning a new
track.
. Dry conditions only.
. StabiliTrak is on and engine
power is slightly reduced based
on conditions.
PERF TRACTION 3 –
SPORT 1 / ACTIVE
HANDLING ON
. For use by drivers who are
familiar with the track.
. Requires more driving skill than
mode 2.
. Dry conditions only.
. StabiliTrak is on and more
engine power is available than in
mode 2.
PERF TRACTION 4 –
SPORT 2 / ACTIVE
HANDLING OFF
. For use by drivers who are
familiar with the track.
. Requires more driving skill than
modes 2 or 3.
. Dry conditions only.
. StabiliTrak is off and available
engine power is available is the
same as mode 3.
PERF TRACTION 5 – RACE /
ACTIVE HANDLING OFF
. For use by drivers who are
familiar with the track.
. Requires more driving skill than
in other modes.
. Dry conditions only.
. StabiliTrak is off and available
engine power is available for
maximum cornering speed.
Use mode 5 for most consistent
performance during drag strip use.
When the TCS/StabiliTrak button is
pressed again, the vehicle exits
PTM mode and the TCS and
StabiliTrak systems are on.

ZL1 Only: For racing or competitive
driving, it is recommended that the
loading of the vehicle be limited to
the driver only, with no other cargo,
and that tires be inflated to at least
180 kPa (26 psi).
If the vehicle is used for racing or
other competitive driving, the rear
axle fluid temperatures may be
higher than would occur in normal
driving. We recommend that the
rear axle fluid be drained and
refilled with new fluid after every
24 hours of racing or competitive
driving. See Recommended Fluids
and Lubricants on page 11‑12.

Read your warranty, IMO if it's not in black and white it's not covered.

I sat-it on the webcast and that question came up. With a pause and a laugh they said quote:" Yes, GM would warrant the car if used for track use as long as you don't get STUPID with the car". What their meaning of "stupid" is is anyones guess.

Its your insurance you have to worry about, if they find out you hit the wall at a track, they will deny coverage.

Running laps at an HPDE -- Covered by Warranty
Racing at the same track in a two hour event -- Not covered
Drag Racing at the Local Track -- Covered
Drag racing on full slicks with the seats removed and a cage -- Not Covered

Drag launches in the ZL1 using the on board computer are covered. Turning everything off and popping the clutch at 6,250 on slicks in not covered. Maybe an easier way to clarify the warranty on the ZL1 is if you think what you plan to do next is not covered, it probably isn't.

Per the 2012 Chevrolet Warranty Manual on page 10, it states:

Damage Due to Accident, Misuse, or Alteration

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty does not cover damage caused as the result of any of the following:

Misuse of the vehicle; such as driving over curbs, overloading, racing, or other competition. Proper vehicle use is discussed in the owner manual.

I hope this information was useful.

but "other competition" may be seen as track days where you are competing for better times

Competing against ones self is not competition. My dealer knows I track. Non issue. But I suppose he could suddenly become a prick. Still unless there is track damage from an impact in not concerned. So as GM advertised publically as covered, I'd think you guys are all covered.

I heard insurance will cover damage if done on practice or track days, but not during a race or competition runs. Can anyone confirm this, or is this specific to different companies insurance policies?
