High flow cats...?

Is it possible to replace only the cats without headers? Are they separate pieces? I was hoping to get a little more sound and possibly a little more power without having to go the tune route...

Yes. Most catbacks will directly bolt up to HF cats. Without the need to install any headers.

JBA makes a section that connects to the factory manifolds and factory cat back but they aren't that great. It does sound a little better but not worth the hassle. Under extreme conditions, they can fail (as mine did at the road course). The internal media got so hot that it came apart and a large piece was wedged against the second 02 sensor. My advice is if you are going that route to use off road pipes with no cats which unfortunately requires a tune.

I have heard good things about the Solo cats. Once you start upping the boost etc, most Zl1 owners remove their cats as they tend to self-destruct.

You don't need a tune with the catless JBA mid pipes. You will just have a check engine light. I just check it occasionally to ensure only the codes for low cat efficiency are what's stored in the ECU.

solo and JBA have them. I have seen people burn both of them up as well though.

to me the best way to do this is JBA off road pipes $200 and live with the CEL car is going to run fine.

or run a more aggresive catback. a corsa and borla catback (stinger or attack) it going to give you more sound without the fear of burned up cats.

if the car is too loud with the off road pipes there is a 2 second way to just wire the flapps closed at all time so you can run the NPP in stock and closed vs open and stock.

What kind of gains are had from a JBA catless mid section?

I did a Rotofab and JBA catless mids. Stock tune it did 511/500 and it was humid as hell when I dyno'd.

I would think something like 5hp or so. 10 tops I would think.

there may be some shift in the power band.

it is realy just the cheapest way to get your car to sound agressive. the stock catback with no cats and the flaps close sound better than the fuse pulled by far. then you go stock settign and it gets pretty lound an aggresive. fuse pulled and it will just be really loud.

you can wire a 3 position switch into the gound pin of the exhasut flap relay and have open/stock/closed as well.

keep in mind once you start adding more power later on if you do, you'll need to ditch the cats all together. And if im not mistaken, most people here will agree that aftermarket hi flow cats are not as robust as the oem cats.

Just bought JBA high flow mids and going to cut them in half. Remove internals and reweld ,so if it gets a visual inspection it has cats.
