Heat exchanger upgrade?

Hey guys...in a few weeks I'm doing some healthy mods. Going with a cam, upper pulley, Bosch 80 lb injectors, lingenfelter twin fuel pump, long tube headers, and a coolant reservoir. My question is: is a new heat exchanger required right now? I haven't road coursed the car and don't plan to. The most it will see is highway pulls and maybe a few passes at the strip with time to cool off.

If that is how you intend to use it then I would say no especially if you do give it time to cool off between runs. Once you decide to start tracking the car then I would say you would want to do the heat exchanger but this is just my opinion. I track and autoX my car alot so it was one of the first things I did.

Personally, I would say go for it while you have everything pulled apart. I don't track nor drag but I find myself WOT quiet a bit and these cars heat up fairly quickly. It's nice to get that quick recovery while driving or while cooling down.

What heat exchanger would you recommend? And are you saying that if you autocross it stock you would do the upgrade? Or only after modding?

I have the Ron Davis Heat Exchanger which is doing a great job with the recovery.

As for needing it for auto cross. I am no expert but I wouldn't think it would be a needed upgrade for auto cross.

I have the D3PE Heat Exchanger (it's a 3 pass HX). For just AutoX and the car in stock form no I wouldn't do it. But I track my car also, when I say track I mean road course use not drag race. For AutoX with those mods I would consider it. Between runs waiting to go my IAT hits 135 but quickly drops down to ~ 100 shortly after takeoff with my heat exchanger and that was in 80 degree weather. I get about the same results in AutoX in 97 degree weather as well.

In my opinion, with your planned mods your at the borderline for needing a better HX, as Camero5 said, it's going to all be pulled apart so if you got the money then go ahead and do it, that way you are facilitating future mods now. If you wait, I'd definitely do it before doing anything else after these.

Ron Davis or LPE with fans. I have a Cooler Logic unit but they are out of business.

What App did you use to overlay the engine parameters on the video? It was interesting to see the IATs drop as the speed speed picked up. As soon as you stopped at the end the IATs started rising very fast. I have the Ron Davis H/E and Ron Davis Radiator in my ZL1.

With that list of mods I would upgrade the heat exchanger. Hard to say which replacement is the best choice. I have the Ron Davis and it is excellent.

Adding a reservoir is also a good idea. Even if you don't change the heat exchanger a reservoir will help a lot. It's added capacity since the stock system hold so little coolant. More coolant means it takes longer to heat up.

I use a combination of TrackAddict Pro for iPhone to do the datalogging and RaceRender to put all the guages in my vids.

I regularly track my car and use the Ron Davis heat exchanger. I'm running around 11.5 lbs of boost (upper only) and have zero heat issues running ~30 minute sessions.

For what you're doing it probably isn't necessary but definitely would be an improvement.
