I was thinking about painting my RS rims but I'm scared to mess them up, I'm not so sure about the steps needed to prep the tires, is rattle canning them a bad idea?

I painted mine. My sig is linked to my journal post with pictures.

Here is how I did it - Matte Black

I purchased:

4 cans of Duplicolor Primer Sealer
4 cans of Duplicolor Wheel Coating - Matte Black
A package of 320 grit sandpaper
3 rolls of masking tape

I removed one wheel at a time. Cleaned and dried the wheel.
Scuffed the entire wheel surface with the 320 grit sandpaper, ensuring to get all the nooks and crannies.
Cleaned and dried the wheel again.
Laid a strip of masking tape between the wheel lip and the bead.
Masked off the rest of the tire.
Sprayed the wheel with 2 coats of primer.
Sprayed the wheel with 3 coats of Matte Black.
Allow to dry for 2 hours.
Reinstall wheel and remove the next, lather, rinse, repeat.

So far it is holding up perfectly. I have put about 750 miles on the car since painting. Zero paint chips , flaking etc etc.

If you want to clear coat them just get the Duplicolor wheel coating CLEAR and follow the directions.

I wanted to keep the Matte finish but have been kicking around the thought of clearing them.

My biggest tip on doing this is:

"Preparation is THE KEY!"

A paint job will only come out as good as your surface prep. Spend the extra time to make sure you get all of the corners and hidden spots with the sandpaper. Then, make sure the wheel is CLEAN AND DRY before moving ahead.

I find it hard to be interested in rattle canning wheels when most reputable powdercoating shops will do your wheels for around 50$ a wheel. way more durable.

I will be attempting this tomorrow, I'll post pictures of the outcome. Any tips to scuffing/prepping surface other than 320 sandpaper?
