Diff service because of C5
Just wanted to share that after reading so many great threads here on C5 I decided to take my ZL into one of my shops to get the rear diff serviced. I did talk to a GM dealership and they advised me it wasn't needed as I have only 12K KM's or about 7K miles on it.
Anyway, the guys ordered in the proper GM diff fluid for my car and I was shocked how dirty the fluid was. It was full of fine metallic fluid and there was a ton of filings on the magnet. I did snap a picture of a sample of how dark the fluid was on a rag. Sorry for the poor picture but there's no flash with an iPad. I'm going to do it again in a bit and keep doing it until the pattern is set on the ring and pinion and it stops getting dirty so quick. Thanks again for to all the guys who posted and convinced me that this was a good idea. And it was. .

This is exactly why I just had mine changed after my first 1500 miles, racing or not. Good call keeping an eye on it.

Did the gears have a good solid pattern on them? Dont think I have eve had a diff open, where I didnt see metallic dust on the magnet. Is it, or was it noisy?

Curious, Are you guys saying I should not only do the 1000 mile Break In oil change, but I should also do a 1000 mile Diff service as well?

1500 mile service on the differential by changing the fluid is a must. I have done it on mine and Smitty's and they looked identical when the fluid was drained...disgusting. Must be lots of break in from the posi clutch material or just the marking compound...whatever it is, it can't be good and a fluid change is simple to perform. I have changed mine a second time as well and it looked great in comparison.

Relax! What you are seeing is normal. There always is a bit of crap on the magnet. That's what it's for. The fluid darkening over time is also what is supposed to happen from heat cycles. That is why you change it. Just need to make sure the drain plug was wiped off before being reinstalled. Everything you are seeing is normal. Only concern yourself if there are chunks of metal.

I know it's normal but I am a bit anal about servicing my car. The cost on these maintenance items is low so why not just change it. There is no down side to keeping fluids clean so I just do it often.
No I didn't have any noise but with snow tires on it is a bit hard to tell. It may just be my imagination but it does seem to drive better or roll easier after the diff service was done. A little prevention never hurt anyone so why wouldn't anyone do this?

Is it best to go with the GM fluids, or is there a synthetic (Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple) that would be better?
