Is the 2018 ZL1 1LE trunk lid reinforced compared to the 2017 ZL1?

Dear Al,

Is the 2018 ZL1 1LE trunk lid reinforced compared to the 2017 ZL1? We understand that you mentioned at the Camarofest that it was reinforced. However, we want you to please verify this claim with your engineers if this is the case. If trunk lid is indeed reinforced for the 2018 model year, what danger does a 2017 ZL1 or even 2017 Camaro SS owner run by having the ZL1 1LE spoiler mounted on their vehicles while tracking their car at speeds greater than 100mph and even 150mph? At this time, ZL1 1LE spoiler is being sold with no disclaimer. It would benefit the Camaro community to know this from a safety standpoint as well and understand the limits of the 2017 ZL1/SS trunk lid.

Assuming there is a difference, please provide the proper part number for the reinforced trunk lid as well.

They are also visually identical on the underside according to those who have seen both side by side.

As someone who mods and adds functional parts to track, I would like to know this answer as well.

Good question!

I think there was a TSB proving the reinforcement was there. Yet, the question of what might happen if you don't have it is a good one!

Just have a chevy dealer pull up the part # to see if it changed for 2018. Al already stated it was different at camaro fest 7 during the tech talk. Let's not waste a question on something he's already confirmed and that we can fairly easily check the part number of.

It's a worth while question as people have claimed that the part number is the same ,and now it would appear that we finally have someone that installed the wing on a pre 18 and has some deformation of the rear deck.

You're claiming the model year 16-18 trunk part #s are the same? Al specifically said otherwise at CamaroFest 7.

That’s not what he said. He said the trunks aren’t the same (which implies the numbers would be different.... but he didn’t specify that). But the numbers are the same and they are visually identical from both sides (even under the liner).

So any differences in the 2018 ZL1LE lid must be a small change to the internal thread washers or something, and for some reason doesn’t carry a different part number. Strange.

I’d like to see pics of the damaged lid. Also be interesting to verify that the genuine 1LEs don’t slightly deform under the mounting pedestals after 160mph track use.

Im not claiming anything. Others in the other thread posted that the parts numbers are the same. I haven't seen that with my own eyes as others havent either , thus why I said the OP has a valid question that would be nice to have some actual proof from the powers that be.

There may be something as little as an additional sheet metal piece spot welded in between the inner and outer skins of the panel. Until someone cuts into one of these I'm inclined to believe Chevy and the TSB over someone saying that they look the same.
