setting off car alarms

Anyone ever have this happen to them? I was driving around south philadelphia last night (narrow streets lots of cars on either side) and just driving around normally an alarm went off.. i thought it was from my exhaust but wasnt quite sure, so i drive up the street and get on another street.. so i pull up next to some cars and rev it to 2.5k rpms, sure enough another alarm goes off. Why does noise cause alarms to go off? I wasnt trying to be a dick, just wanted to see if it really was my car doing it

Ha Ha! I do this all the time. It's the vibration and sensitivity the alarm is set at.

Lucky, I wish I could get car alarms to go off in the parking decks on campus.

I had a buddy in high school who put a glasspack muffler on his '88 Toyota 4 banger pickup, that thing would set off some alarms, sounded terrible, but just hit that right pitch.

Sound waves create vibration.

The louder the sound, the more vibration.
I am sure you have seen speaker cones vibrate, and the louder you turn the music up the more they vibrate.

Some (not all) car alarms have "motion" sensors.
And in some cases the sensitivity to motion can be adjusted.
Drive by one of those cars with stock quiet exhaust and nothing happens, but drive by with a loud exhaust system and there is the possibility of setting off the alarm.

Yes.

Some alarms are very sensitive. I remember years ago I lived in an apt complex and this kid had a Jeep with an alarm that if you just walked by it it would go off. A robot voice like Robocop would say "Step Away From The Car!" And then all these loud obnoxious police siren sounds would go off. This would happen all night long and it used to piss me off.

Yep, I can usually find 2 cars a day in the parking garage that go off when I go past - I know I'm not a mature adult because it makes me smile

Mine does it all the time. I set my co-workers truck alarm off once and I told him my car scared his truck.

My '70 Buick has a 7.5L, big tube headers, 2.5" exhaust. Yup. It sets off car alarms. Vibration.

Mine does it in the parking garage. It sets off the glass breakage sensor.
