Shorty's will not give you the power potential that Long Tubes will.

But if you live where emission checks are required, Long Tubes will probably not pass and Shorty's will.

Shorty's are usually direct bolt on to your factory down pipes, without any modifications.
Long Tubes will require a little more work to get hooked up.

In the end, shorty's really won't give you much of anything in the way of power gains over your stock system.
But they will add a little "cool factor" in looks over the stock system.

But nothing will beat the Long Tubes in either looks or performance.

Though generally acceptable in the banter over the advantages gained its also true that no shoe fits all feet either.....................the difference's also involves making the one simple yet affordable performance decision to either add headers or not and why shorties or long tube...............in that case. Shorties are better than stock equipment and they're definiately gains made by using them.............Where ? In the amount of engine torque produced in the lower rpm ranges. The shorties are a perfect budget performance choice, usually plug and play especially on engines of 400 cubic inches or less. Which stock Gen5's are. On the other hand long tubes offer the possiblities of gaining HP advantages in the upper relms of RPM. They're generally going to offer more improvements whenever the engine is 400 cubes are larger. Plug and play is unlikley, fitment issues abound as well as the mirad of other scenarios regarding meeting emisssion's. ie. On a final note they're other variables that are as important as size/length on actual performance gains chosing headers and those include design elements such as tubing material, diameter, placement, air flow and restriction. Fact is some quaility shorties offer more gains than other poorly designed and constructed long tubes.

For the sake of clarification: Shorties won't install without modification of the down pipe - at least on the V6 anyway. Several inches will have to be removed and a flange welded on.

I realize that the main reason people buy shorties is to preserve their warranty, thus making this question somewhat moot. But I'll ask it anyways.

Given a mostly stock LS3 or L99, people see gains of 35-45 rwhp with long tubes and 5-15 with shorties. But all the long tube numbers, I've seen, are put up by people who got a tune with their headers. What are the apples to apples comparison of long tubes vs. shorties.

I would like to see numbers comparing un-tuned gains for long tubes and shorties.

and/or

I would like to see numbers comparing tuned gaines long tubes and shorties.

Edit: I realize I asked this question in the wrong forum. I accidentally clicked the v6 forum.

Long tubes mean you lose the STOCK CATS... you either go no cats or high flow cats.... either way you will end up with a very different exhaust sound than you have now....

When we did shorties it deepened the exhaust note a bit, but also made it more full...

Where I noticed the difference between stock manifolds and shorties was at idle... the idle definitely got deeper... and you could hear/feel the idle inside the car with the windows up...

stock manifolds vs JBA shorties:

Nicely demonstrated!

I should qualify my " and even better with HFC's" statement by pointing out the Solo's come with a very nice resonator attached.

I haven't heard any V6's with shorties and straight high-flow cats.

Oh, good lord.

Very happy with the sound & performace with my JBA's. Took some doing to get the Stacker flanges to mate properly early on but no problems since.

That was about 13k ago. Installer used some exhaust sealant and that stopped any leaks. No cel.

With that said, if interested in short headers, I would go with the totally welded Doug Thorley's if I had to do it over again.
