My guess is it reads it as knock.

I got scared that I might break something so I've been putting 93 ever since.

Well at least you you learned early age, that when there is a minimum recommend octane, that's what you should use.

My 72 Chevelle would tell me loud and clear when I wasn't running good enough gas. It had a thirst for the expensive stuff. It was a she.

You must have bumped the compression. Starting in 1971, the compression ratios took a BIG nosedive.

Guys, I'm getting L99 soon so would a fuse pull correct the fuel reading or will I still need to get a tune.

The octane were I live is 95 for premium and 91 for regular

Ok, here is how it works.

The car (ss) is designed to run on 93 octane. If anyone ever (most dealers, the cheap bastards) puts less than 93 octane into it, the computer switches the fuel map to run on lower octane.

The problem is that the fuel map does not switch back after running out of the low octane and replacing with 93.

You must manually reset the fuel map by doing a fuse pull or installing a tune.

to do the fuse pull properly, run the tank down to almost empty.
Fill up with the good stuff, run the car for another 50 or so miles to clear out the junk fuel, then do the fuse pull overnight.

eventually, maybe you could get a custom tune for the 95 octane, that would be a beast!

Where do you live that they have 95???

From a calibration ballpark perspective, I cant add as much timing because knock pops up all the time with lower octane.

Lets say I can get for example 22 degrees of timing at WOT with 93 Octane, its about minus 2 or 3 degrees for 91 Octane, and about minus another 2-3 for 87 octane.

As a non-tuner, you won't really see what's actually happening to the car. For us tuners, we see it all over the data log screen when knock retard starts showing up everywhere.

There is a significant change in the cars calibration with a lower octane, especially in these 4000lb beasts. I've tuned customers cars before that insist on running their 5th gen on 87 and was pulling OUT timing from the STOCK low octane timing table. I'd wager to say you lose 30'ish rwhp to efficiently run 87 octane with no knock retard in a large car like the 5th gen.

There is a huge difference on the ZL1. When I bought my 13 it had about 30miles on it. When I drove it I thought it was a dog. I ran the tank almost empty, put in 94 and drove around for a bit. I then did the fuse pull and it was a huge difference.

Thanks for the advice man. It is always good to read your comments

Im not from the states actually. I live in Oman and work for its leading Oil company. Thats why we are good in producing high octane

It is very far to extend a pipeline to you
