Hmm. This did happen after driving through some rain. But I drove through rain before and it didn't happen. Maybe it was heavier this time.

I think i know what happened It may be the chip fell out of the lens, its held in with 4 plastic clips and it may have got bumped and fell out.

It was thinking moisture, or more likely dust, between the inner and out lenses. The sun was shining directly on on the camera this evening, and I could see circles on the display, like dust or something is on the inner lens.

I just got the wiring harness from Ofer but it doesnt have any wiring instructions. I am not clear on where to tap into power so that the thing turns on when the car is put into reverse..

The mirror will get power automatically when you plug in ofer's harness. There is a green wire and an RCA plug coming off of his harness. You need to plug in the RCA connector from the camera to that, splice the +12V wire from the camera to ofer's green wire, and the ground wire from the camera to chassis. That's all the connections. The rest is just mounting the camera and running wires.

OK, but how does the whole thing know that I am in reverse? The mirror or the camera would need to know I'm in reverse in order to turn on, otherwise they'd be on all the time.

The green wire on Ofer's harness is hot when the car is in reverse. The camera's power wire connects to that green wire. That way, the camera and the mirror LCD turn on when the car is in reverse. The rest of the mirror has power all the time (so On Star and phone buttons work). It's only the LCD and the camera that only get power when in reverse.

Does the mirror somehow know the car is in reverse though? That is the part nobody is explaining. I understand how the camera wire connects to the green wire, but I dont get how the 'harness' gets its power. I would think I'd have to splice into a wire someplace (like the reverse lights themselves).

Yes. The cars were actually wired for a backup camera system. There is a wire in the mirror harness that turns on when the car is in reverse. Ofer has tapped that in his harness (clever boy).

GM just didn't offer the backup cameras as an option even though they included the wiring for it.

I'm not 100% sure. Mine does and it was built in Jan. 2010.

I have also heard that the 2LT and 2SS have the wiring. I think the others may need to be wired differently, but Ofer (2SSRS) can tell you more. He is the master.
