Is it crazy to buy the manual camaro if I lived in Los Angeles?

I've never driven a manual car before and I know this topic has been beaten to death. I will probably be moving to Los Angeles in the next few months. I'm in my 20's so I don't have any knee problems or anything. I do like to screw around with the radio controls and it might be a daily driver. Is it that much of a hassle? I do hear its more fun to drive the manual but members who live in that area do you have an auto or manual with the camaro ss?

As your first-ever manual? I'd say no. You can play with the auto in Manual mode though.

LOL, I had a quick answer until I read the "lived in Los Angeles" part of your thread title.

My opinion is simply if you use this car for commuting and spend 90% of the time sitting in traffic, consider the auto.

BUT, if you use the car at all at times when you can drive on more open roads or up in the canyons................get the manual. For me it is far more engaging and interesting to drive a car with a manual trans.

It just depends on how you personally use the car and how much you can tolerate using both feet instead one when you are in traffic.

There are several Camaro5 members who chose stick when they ordered their Camaro... and it was their first time owning a stick. No problems. It takes 2-4 weeks to become "used" to the technique, but after that it's second nature.
I say go for it!!

I sat in traffic on the Golden Gate for 2 hours crawling along and it was 100% fine to drive. I wasn't tired or w/e if thats what you are worried about.

If you have any interest in buying the manual and aren't like 90 years old or have knee problems buy it, you wont regret it.

Damn guy in a Lamborghini broke down and cut off 2 lanes heading north out of SF. Quality automobile.

I lived in Pt. Mugu and traveled the 405, 5, 101 on a normal basis. There were times I wish I had a auto when sitting in nasty traffic but the fun of rowing through the gears at all other times made it worth owning a manual. I say if you want a manual go for it

Crazy...no. All depends on what you want. If you want a manual...get one. If not...go with the auto. However...if you plan on doing any exhaust mods to the car, the AFM will drive you nuts on the auto's. You'll need to get that tuned out ASAP

cool thanks so far for the advice...before i buy the car i'm probably going to practice on a beater manual if I can. any other issues i should be concerned about with the manual camaro...i'm sure the exhaust sounds better and will i have better reaction time in the manual?

If you can afford to, just move somewhere that is within a few miles of work. That way stop and go traffic really isn't a problem.

Manuals aren't really an issue most days. You will forget you are even shifting after awhile. It becomes as ingrained as turning on the blinker to turn.

If your commute involves a lot of freeway driving in rush hour, get the auto. I live 1 hour up but drive through LA (in a different car) very often and I can not imagine sitting 1-2 hours in stop and go traffic with a manual tranny.

I live in LA. Have never owned a manual car before. Had about two hours practice on my buddy's Saturn and changed my order from the auto to the stick. The best thing I ever did to be honest. I used to sit in traffic on my commute to work, but had no problem with it. The car is so much fun to drive in the stick. I drove both the automatic and manual and can tell you that more satisfaction comes from driving the manual, even in LA. Like stated above, you just have to get used to this clutch and shifting and you will be fine. Go manual.
