I bought some pre-cut decals on ebay...back went on fine, front was...difficult, and now there's a nasty fold/scratch down the middle. I couldn't find any vinyl anywhere, hobby shops, Wal-mart, etc so I bought a couple sheets off ebay to try again. Any tips on that front emblem? I notice someone cut theirs in half down the middle, any pics?

before you peel off the backing, hit it with a blow dryer to soften it up.
only peel off half the backing and start in the middle working your way out. keep whatever vinyl isn't sticking 90* from the bowtie, that way nothing that you dont' push down will stick and trap a bubble. Just go slow and don't be afraid to pull it back off a little bit to get it applied smooth.

Great pics all!!
The best tip is to work it out from the center and that will eliminate/reduce the risk for any bubbles. Depending on the temperature, it should lay flat and smooth. Some vinyl is more "cheap" than others and has a higer percentage of plastic verses rubber and it won't flex as much. Try different styles and hit those shops up for cuts and scrap pieces to practice with. They get geeked up to give it to "art students" instead of throwing it away. Ivan |

is the vinyl supposed to be stretched while applied or just kind of laying on the bowties? just did my front and am frustrated at the little imperfections.. I'm going to redo iy any other tips? should I be wetting the bowtie before applying the vinyl? I just cleaned it and applied vinyl direct to the dry surface.. <img src="http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs149.ash2/40769_423000477614_521447614_4984964_4295142_n.jpg ">

Not bad at all man. SOme of the guys have had success stretching it while others not. I think that it depends on the quality of the vinyl. I've had to strech a couple to make em completely smooth. You can cheat yours a bit and take a needle to "pop" the airbubbles until you decide to try again. If you're like me, you prolly want it damn near perfect and that solution won't last long. Keep at it and save that $$ for something nice! Best of luck gang! Ivan |

I'm going to retry tonight I think I had better progress with the front. I definitely want the professionally done look.. It looks great from 7 feet away but I know it's there and needs to be fixed. |

How well does the vinyl stay on after having the car washed? I'd be worried that the soapy water might start to make the vinyl peel off.
Also, how well does the vinyl stand up to the sun? |

The stripes on my car are vinyl. Have had them for about 6 months, and the car washes/sun has done nothing to them yet. I would assume the bowties will be no different!

I still have the original one that I first did on this thread. Had about 8k miles of road miles on it and there was one spot where a rock indented the vinyl, but aside from that, three car washes a week and it still looks pretty darned good.
Yeah, very hard to believe that people PAY $20 for precut pieces.......makes me want to make em for the cost of the vinyl, but this way is so much better since you cut the vinyl so that it curves arounde the perimeter of the bowtie and actually goes down into the crevass. Keep the DIY pics comin ya'll!! Ivan |
