3.6 LLT Engine is on Ward's 10 best second year in a row.

Our 3.6 L V6 LLT Engine was voted one of the best 10 engines in the world for the second straight year by Ward's.

http://wardsauto.com/reports/2009/tenbest/

For the record, I am getting about 29.2 mpg (avg 70 mph) straight highway and my car is still in the break in period. 50% hwy and 50% city I average 23.9 mpg. I think this is incredible.

I don't know why some of the V8 guys bash this car, but it is an incredible feat of engineering. Anyway, for a daily commuter, this seems the only way to go.

Got a friend who has the SS and he is averaging about 16 mpg overall and states he can eek out 20 mpg straight hwy. Worse than the EPA ratings of 15 and 24 for the SS model.

It is a great engine, but it's actually not on the 10 best this year. Ward's has released the "2010" 10 best:
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/12/09/w...ines-for-2010/

On a similar topic, many auto enthusiats say they prefer the v6 over the V8. However, none of really given specific reasons. Any info on that?

Don't have the info on that, but I do see that in skid pad tests, the V6 has better handling due to weight distribution. This may be one reason.

These ratings change year to year, but the 3.6 LLT is still a great engine. I got to imagine that in 2011, the new Ford 3.7 V6 will probably make the list. It will have about he same ratings as the 3.6 LLT engine.

Indeed a great engine. All that and 304 hp. I get much better than 20 on the highway with my SS. I see 24 to 25, 6th gear all highway.

Yeah, I don't know why my friend doesn't get better. He drives spirited, but how spirited can you drive straight highway.

So far so good for me. The V6 meets or exceeds all my expectations. Best MPG I got was 30.5 the first day with Canadian Gas.
Now all hwy is around 28 MPG. Still breaking in @ 2800 miles.

Great low and high end performance

Our V6 camaro is equipped with the 6 spd auto trans. I believe the low first gear coupled with the cam phasing (VVT) is one reason it performs so well out of the hole. As well if you look at the highway gearing we are turning very low rpm in 6th gear. Looks to me like GM did a remarkable job catching the sweet spot for mpg at highway speeds. Ours has just 460 miles and when I get her (Scarlet) on the freeway, dial the cruise in at 70 mph, she is consistently above 30 mpg. Really glad we went with the LT package instead of the SS.

cheers,

Bill n Bev

This really just puts a huge smile on my face. Not only is it recognized for its great performance and gas mileage, its also recognized for being a reliable engine. I know they don't say its a very reliable engine exactly, but if it makes that list for a 2nd time in a row, well hot damn, I am impressed and kudos to GM for making such a great engine

I love my v6. The 3.6 LLT is a powerful little engine. My one and only complaint is......

Why does it have to run so damn rich?

I have had high performance small block and big block engines in the past and never had to run them as rich as this 3.6 does. I just don't like all the black crap coming out of the tailpipes. When I had the stock mufflers on it, the black liquid dripped out of the drain holes in the bottom of the mufflers and onto my garage floor. It gets all over the back end of the car in just a few miles of driving. Perfect example is this past Saturday. The car was clean. I drove about 10 miles down the road to a stereo shop and then came right back home. 20 miles round trip. When I got back home, black crap from the exhaust all over the back of the car. I broke out the Zaino Z-8 and cleaned it off.

My other concern is, if it runs this rich will the sniffer fail it when it comes time to have the car inspected?

While the black tail pipes are a PITA, i don't think that means your emissions are bad.... if the cats are doing their job, which I assume they are, then the car should pass...

Hmmm... as for rich... with the high compression ratio and running on 87 octane... yeah, they pretty much have to run this car rich...

John,
Yes I guess you are correct about the 11.3:1 compression & 87 octane being the reason it runs very rich.....BUT I think GM could have done a better job!
I have a Lexus V6 3.5 liters, 272 HP with 10.8:1 compression and I use 87 octane & it burns Perfectly CLEAN, NO trace of Black in the tailpipes at all. You could wipe a rag in the tailpipes & not get any soot on it.
So I would not think .5 difference in compression should make such a VAST difference....

Just like kga10734 said I also get the black soot on the back of the Camaro after app. 20 miles of driving.

.5 is a fair amount of difference when it comes to CR... and the LLT is making about 30 more HP... Also, is does your Lexus have a quieter exhaust system?

But yeah... does seem like there should be less soot..
