I mean, the cops could be thinking, what if that's a real gun. what if they caught someone who was about to go berserk. what if they just got done killing someone with that gun, what if I get shot with that gun. what if it penetrates my bulletproof vest. what if I don't get to see my family ever again...I can give you a ton of what if's, that go in the other direction.
