Should I buy a 2010 2SS with only 15k miles?
Hi everyone
I’m considering buying a 2010 to SS with automatic and only 15,000 miles. I’m probably over researching this but I’ve read that the 2010 model you should avoid because of some engine and transmission problems. It is recommended that I should go with the 2011 or newer Any help on this and your input would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Scott |

I've made it a point to avoid GMs legendary AFM on its auto V8s.
Other than that I'd say blend door and extra grounds. Low miles car. What are they asking? Accidents?

I have a 2010 2SS/RS. LS3 M6. I'm sitting around 75k miles and its been the most reliable car I've ever owned. I know the AFM in the autos can be troublesome but I cant weigh in on that.

Active Fuel Management - it shuts down cylinders by “disconnecting” the valve lifters and shutting off injectors on certain cylinders. The valve lifters on those cylinders are subject to fail. They can be replaced with non collapsible lifters, that with a cam change puts you into an LS3 basically. The automatic Camaro engines are coded L99 which is an active fuel management 6.2 liter engine.

I wouldn't hesitate. I’ve owned 2 ‘10’s and both have been great cars. AFM is active fuel management, basically under light loads the computer drops the lifters on 4 cylinders and shuts fuel off to those cylinders to save fuel. It doesn’t save fuel, and the lifters are big time weak point and common failure point. They can be removed and AFM deleted. AFM only came on SS automatic cars. I wouldn’t avoid a nice V8 auto car just because of AFM, I would just put some cash aside to delete it asap. My current 2010 SS only has 4,000 miles on it. As said above, low mile 5th gen cars are getting harder to find.

You can tune the AFM out and literally forget it was ever there. Sure don't have to worry about voiding the warranty on a 2010. Can't say if that helps the lifters last longer or not.
Mine's been gone so long it's only these threads that remind me I ever had AFM.

Buy it...if you want a 5th gen, buy it. its a good deal, no accidents and issues, buy it. The AFM is easily disabled with a tune, and if you want to ever put a cam in the car, you can change the lifters at that point as well! Autos are faster than manuals as well!!

The only real downgrade on the early cars is the less effective rear sway bar set up. And this really only comes into play if you are throwing the car into the curves pretty hard.

If it's been well cared for and has a clean carfax I'd definitely think seriously about buying it. Check to see if the AC blows ice cold AND make sure the heat is toasty hot, this verifies good blend door function. Is it going to be a daily driver or hobby car? Plenty of good resources in this forum if you just want to maintain or MOD from mild to wild. Don't let the AFM or first year stuff bother you. PLENTY of excellent '10s running around.
