Question for the people that have grinding issues. How does the shifter feel while parked, clutch in and moving the shifter into second/third? Notchy or smooth?
its notchy, but if i go through the gears a few times it becomes more smooth. im having all the same issues as you guys. i thought this tranny was supposed to be pretty stout. guess not. ill drive it till it breaks and then ill rebuild it stronger then a tank lol.

I talked to 2 different dealers in my area 1 said they haven't heard of that issue the other said they have heard of it but until GM comes forward with a fix they couldn't help me

Same old song and dance with GM. I doubt they will ever offer a fix due to the cost. I'm just gonna send it in on my own dime to Tick for a rebuild after the first of the year.

Sux, but my '12 shifts like no gm tranny I ever shifted. There is an obvious difference in this tranny vs the 10-11. Super surprised.

I called my service department again. I know it was cold out and all, and I let the car sit for a week.....

But I drove the car in town for about 15 minutes or more and I got the grind again. Transmission didn't look terribly warmed up but I think 3-5 minutes of letting the car idle to warm up the coolant, then another 15 minutes of driving should be enough...

Maybe not? Any opinions on this? I just want to keep harassing them about it so I don't give it to them later and they say "Driver abuse".

For me, it definintely and consistently occurs when trans is below a certain temp - can't name it off the top of my head. However, after having 2nd gear synchros replaced by my awesome dealership (seriously), it's still doing it. It's in storage for Winter now, so I can't give more detail, nor have I ever driven it when this cold out. But even in the summer I'd have to grandpa-shift for about the first 5-10 minutes of driving before it would be warmed up enough to stop.

Not sure how many others have had the synchros replaced and are actually free of the issue - but I can tell you that they used the 'updated' part in mine and it doesn't matter.

Makes me want to sell the car... :-/ - shouldn't have issues like this on a 36k+ car.

I haven't broken 1500 miles yet so I feel your pain there. Funny enough, after typing that post and letting the car sit for about 30 minutes, I went out and drove it for another 10-15 minutes in the city and I had zero problems...

Maybe it was because the car was super cold after sitting since Tuesday mid-day? I'm going to see when my dealer calls me back and decide if I want to take it back or just let the car warm up.

These colder temps may be what is doing this car in?

Definitely temp dependant - I can shift as hard and fast as I want if it's warmed up -- but even then, I'll sometimes get a grind ever so slightly, but it won't be nearly as bad as when it's cold. If it's cold (the engine/trans) then I can get it to grind every 1-2 if I don't pay attention and intentionally shift slower than a normal person would... regardless of RPM and load.

Exclamation 1st to second grind

I believe this is the reason. Look at the 1st gear ratio compared to 2nd gear. Big difference.
Wide ratio.
A few years ago (60's and 70's) You could order a Close Ratio or a Wide Ratio 4 speed manual for your muscle car from Chevy and others. The Close Ratio had gears very close to each other and was intended for straight line racing and low rear end gears like 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 etc. Therefor you could "power shift" the close ratio's for those that know what that is. Means hold the gas pedal to the floor and bang the 4 speed thru the gears without letting off the gas.
The ""wide ratio couldn't be power shifted cause the gear ratios were too far apart and intended for oval and road course racing.
We don't get that luxury with cars of today.
You have to buy racingf transmissions and change rear end gears.
Just the way it is!
