Question about tire sizes
I have a question regarding tire sizes. I've read threads about recommended tire sizes etc but my question is this. What does each number represent? Might sound like a dumb question, if it is I'm sorry just didn't know. Also I'm looking for a thin low profile tire, I don't like the thicker sized stock tires I have now so I want to wrap my new rims in a thinner tire. What size would you recommend? Thanks.

I had 22 and went to the 18s you have now. BF goodrich puts out a higher speed rating tire than the OEM you are driving now in the same size, P245/55R18 all-season. Best move I ever made the ride is better and the performance is also great on the strip. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a low profile tire on a this type of race car. Many reason why a larger profile tire is better.
Most just think the low profile looks better.

Low profile is better for a show car. I don't take this one to the track it's all cosmetic upgrades. But I'll keep that advice in mind for when I get my track car, thanks!

First decide how big rims you are looking for. 24? 22? 20? Then you look for your tires. 245/55/R18 means 245 Width of the Tire, 55% of it is Profile (on both sides, front and back) and 18" inch rims.
So for example, maybe you want 275/40/R20... usually for the rears for 20". So 275 Width, only 40% of 275 is profile, and Rim 20s. Do you kind of understand the numbers now? for 20" fronts, its mostly 245/45/R20.

Ah ok perfect thanks that was really helpful. Now does the greater percentage mean the thinner the tire? or is it the opposite? And I'm going with 22s

The lower the percentage is the thinner the tire, As long as the Width is the same. ie 275/40/20 is a bigger tire then a 275/30/20

Your 22s will have a thinner tire for sure. What is important is that the outer diameter (height) of the tire remains similar to the factory tires. As wheel diameter increases (20" up to 22") your tire sidewall simply reduces in thickness. The 20" and 22" tires themselves should be about the same height though. Shoot for a max of 1/2-inch difference in height. Otherwise, your speedometer, automatic trans shift points, Anti-Lock braking system, traction control, etc... will be thrown off.
