Arrow L99 owners please help

...and please be honest. But do you guys regret buying the automatic? I already have a black 6 speed 5.0L and am ready for a Summit White 1SS but really want an automatic to add to the stable(very excited about the fact of owning both a 5.0 and an SS). Only problem is that I've been going through some older threads doing some researsh and have noticed quite a few guys posting dyno numbers which IMO seemed kinda low considering these cars are supposed to be 400hp vehicles. Now I know that this is not rwh but some guys had numbers as low as 295rwhp and most were averageing around 320 rwhp as compared to the LS3s numbers which seem to be more realistic compared to their advertised output of 425hp. Is this the norm? Does anyone know what the 2011 automatics are actually dynoing at?

Please guys not trying to start a BS argument about the Mustang versus Camaro crap on here or an LS3>L99 argument cause I tend to agree that purely from a performance oriented perspective yes the LS3 would be the better option, just not for overall comfort/practicality for the day to day grind. But I work hard just like I'm thinking most folks in here do and am willing to spend my hard earned money on a GM product because I do like what they are making and am dedicated to buying American. Just not wanting to buy one(L99) and then later on be dissapointed because it underperformed. I bought my Mustang and am very pleased and would like nothing more than to have the same experience with the L99 SS Camaro. But as I mentined earlier that by reading some of the threads here, I'm leary as to what could result. And yes I've test driven it but that initial exitement will eventually give way to the daily grind and familiarity of the vehicle. By no means sm I sasying that it'll get boring but I plan on keeping these two cars for a long time and as everyone knows the mod bug prevails and a few boltons on the L99 would no doubt find their way on(would love about 400rwhp from basic boltons if possible). Like I said just don't want to regret it 6 months from now and thinking I should have gotten the LS3 or maybe even the Challenger..

In all honesty, after driving many high performance cars both manuals amd auto's I can say the L99 is a great car. If an auto fit's your needs you will have no regrets choosing one. I have never dyno'd mine but can tell you they have plenty of power and with a few simple bolt on's they really wake up. I have driven the challenger and have had a challenger owner drive mine, they have regrests not me.

The low dynoing L99's are ones that had non premuim gas put in them by the dealer or enduser. The cars need the fuse pull to fix the issue. If it took GM engineers looking at why my car was slow almost a day to figure out it was running on the low octane tables I am sure tuners that do not know about the issue would ever fix it.

Now that my car is fixed for the last 16 months she has left many Mustangs and even LS3's in her rear view mirror. The gearing on the L99 makes it a little quicker to 60MPH than a LS3 both being stock. And that is with a good driver in the LS3. Add a few mods like I have and she can jump even better.

I'll be honest and say after owning mine for a couple of weeks there's been a few times I've had buyer's remorse about not only buying the L99 vs LS3 but also about not buying the Challenger SRT8. However, that brief remorse quickly disappears when I look at it or drive it. No regrets over my choice.

I think some of the low rwhp numbers you've seen are from those with either weak MAFs (thankfully mine's K22; not a single letter) or low octane fuel tables (#5 and 20 fuse pull) or both. All I know is this car stock blows the doors off both my '69 RS (400hp motor as well) and 1996 Impala SS LT1. I believe once my bolt-ons and tune are done in a couple of weeks this car will be scary fast.

First off you own a very nice Mustang, I would love to have a 5.0 or even better a boss and may do so in the future. As an L99 owner I can say that the L99 runs very strong especially after about 1500 miles it really started to wake up. Having for example driven for a long time a Charger SRT8 auto for example which has 425 HP I can say the L99 has every bit the power the Charger had, in fact I feel its slightly quicker. If you look at the fast list the L99 has run a 12.8 stock, in Magazine tests the average has been 13.1-13.3 quarter mile times, the latter run in very high humidity. Also bear in mind that there is a well documented TSB and thread on some L99's under performing due to the computer going off of Low Octane tables but not switching back to the high octane tables unless a "fuse" pull was done. I like how the auto rev matches when driving it in a performance manner also. Also keep in mind that all it takes is a really good tune with bolt ons to really make the Auto perform. Now for the negatives obviously AFM drone sucks when removing the resonator and GM is not tune friendly at all. Unlike Ford which offers Mods with supporting calibrations GM does not. But honestly you can see there are several L99's that have dynod 335-340 rwhp. I recommend you test drive one before buying but in closing i have no regrets having my L99 over an LS3

I dyno'd mine stock and it was running at 330HP/331 max torque. Added a CAI and tune and it went up to 344HP/361 max torque. Getting ready to add headers and cat back this weekend...should up the horses a bit more. I don't regret buying the L99 based off horsepower...it has plenty! But I do regret not buying the 6 speed just for the sheer fun of driving a stick!

How do you do the fuse pull to reset the computers fuel table? What fuse is it? Do you have to cycle the ignition switch on and off?

The LS3 is rated at 426 hp. Subtracting off 15% drivetrain losses yields 362 rwhp.
The L99 is rated at 400 hp. Subtracting off 20% drivetrain losses yields 320 rwhp.

The L99 starts with less power and has higher drivetrain losses due to the AT.

But these are just numbers... look at track times for each and you'll see that they're pretty equal - so I wouldn't worry about the dyno numbers and get the transmission that you want...

The L99 has equal or better track times because, below 4200 rpm, the torque is higher due to variable valve timing.

The fun factor is large with the smooth shifting A6. Personally, I don't even bother with paddle shifting most of the time.

I have no regrets.

I test drove both the Manny and auto. I went L99 because I like to just sit back and drive and not shift all the time. The power is great, and the fun factor is awesome.

The L99 will out perform the manual unless the manual operator is a good driver and then it becomes close.

The only regrets I have in the auto is the AFM and the valve tappet noise. It just bothers me when it feels as if it lugging or shuttering, just before returning to 8 cycl mode. Sometimes I wish I had gotten the manual but would probably not like all the shifting, but who knows. Had I gotten the manual, would have saved $1,000+. If I were to get one today, it would probably be the manual.
