Gas milage difference on a 819 mile round trip
So took a family trip down to San Antonio and saw a big difference on the drive back home vs the drive down. I filled up the tank on post and took HWY 171 in Louisiana to Lake Charles then took I-10 through Houston and down to San Antonio. On the way back we filled up at Ft. Sam Houston and took the same route home. I maintained the same speeds both there and back. The only deviation to the route was when we got into Houston on the way back I took the HOV lanes to avoid some traffic. So going to San Antonio I got 28.7 MPG. Coming back I got 25.3 MPG. Temperature going down was 94 degrees and cloudy until we got into San Antonio then it rained. Coming back it was 88 degrees and sprinkling most of the way. Before we left I changed my oil and used my normal Mobil 1 Full synthetic and I also gave the car the good ol sea foam treatment for the first time (enjoyed the smoke show.) I filled up using regular 87 octane gas both times. So any Ideas on why the drastic change in MPG?

Did you use the same brand of gas? If not that may have caused it.

Which way was the wind blowing, and what was the humidity? Did you bring back more weight, like souvenirs. Also did you say that you didn't take the HOV back? Where you in more traffic? I think all those can play a part in the difference.

weight
the difference is due to the difference between you and your family's weight going and coming.
It is a comon mistake that drivers make when reviewing their gas milage. Happens all the time.

as far as gas goes I filled up at aafes gas stations on military bases so as far as I know the gas is the same. There was very little if any wind going both ways and I only used the HOV lane for about 5 miles but traffic on both days was not terribly heavy. I was able to maintain the speeds I wanted.

Altitude difference? One way mostly uphill and the other way mostly downhill?
I just did a 500 mile trip and averaged 22.8 one way and 25.2 the other in my SS. Granted I averaged 77 mph on the way up (22.8) and took my time coming home with the cruise set at 72 (25.2). But I take 1/3rd of the route regularly for work and I always average higher on the way back.

Going, you went west and travelled against the rotation of the earth. Coming back, east, you travelled with the rotation. You're welcome.

Might have been the incline of the road.

My money is on ethanol content. "up to 10%" is a nice story, but don't believe it. Even if you do believe it, 10% ethanol versus 5% ethanol can make a big difference.

I'm guessing with the others who say elevation... My rides to and from work vary on mileage (better going, worse coming home) and its due to the topography.
